Matthew 16:28 Meaning of Some Who Are Standing Here Will Not Taste Death
Jun 19, 2020 by Editor in Chief
Matthew 16:28
“Truly I tell you, some who are standing here will not taste death before they see the Son of Man coming in his kingdom.”

Explanation and Commentary of Matthew 16:28

There are multiple ways in which this prediction came true.

He was referring to the "transfiguration," literally the very next event mentioned by Matthew. Jesus will be transfigured from His fully human form into His glorious kingdom appearance as the Son of God. His face will shine like the sun, and His clothes will become white as light (Matthew 17:1–2). Peter, James, and John will be eyewitnesses to this event.

The next chapter details Jesus’ transfiguration. Many of his hearers would see the kingdom of God coming in his power over sickness, demons, and death. Most of them would see him in his glorified form after his resurrection. The kingdom of God is one of power. When we see the miraculous power of God we are seeing the in-breaking of the future heavenly kingdom.

Jesus taught his disciples to pray, “Let your kingdom come” (Mt 6:10), and this is a powerful prayer indeed, imploring God to take authority over an area of the earth in which he has, for his own reasons, not yet taken authority “as it is in heaven.” It is a profound privilege for the Spirit-filled disciple of Jesus to continue his ministry of the kingdom and use the “keys” he has given us (Mt 16:19). The ultimate reality is that the whole of existence will come under the direct authority of God finally at the end of days when satan and death are cast into the lake of fire (Rev 20:10). In the fully come kingdom of God, there will be no death, mourning or weeping (Rev 21:4). This kingdom has been inaugurated in Jesus and has partially arrived, which is why we are to pray and to preach.

Breaking Down the Key Parts of Matthew 16:28

#1 “Truly I tell you,”
Jesus’ favorite phrase used to underline the statements that follow.

#2 “some who are standing here will not taste death before they see the Son of Man coming in his kingdom.”
Jesus spoke of the eminent in-breaking of the future kingdom of God. He often demonstrated what could be thought of as a taste of what is to come when the New Heavens and the New Earth come in place of the old (Rev 21:1). When he was transfigured, when he did a miracle, especially one of freedom from sickness, demonic oppression, or death, and most of all, when he rose from the dead, he fulfilled his current prediction. Jesus has ultimate power over these things because it was “his kingdom” that was coming.

Truthfully, I do not know!

I just took the part that is my duty which is in verse 24 "deny myself and follow after Him"

The one about"not tasting death" is not in my hand so I go on looking for my other duties which Christ called on me to do.

Aside the transfiguration and ascension into heaven amongst other signs, John also didn't die before seeing the kingdom and all its awesomeness as revealed to him in the book of revelation. There were many things which were not recorded but the ones we know were recorded in view that they were enough to make us believe that Jesus is lord!

I believe the key is in the word "See" as used in that verse. undecided

We know John, and Peter, for instance, did "see" the Son of man coming in His Kingdom, before they died. undecided

Now let's go back to 27

27 For the Son of Man is going to come in his Father’s glory with his angels, and then he will reward each person according to what they have done.

Matthew 16:27 NIV

Obviously he wasn't talking about an appearance but that great big day.

C'mon now that is not right and just for you to say!

The bulk of the Bible is about Duties Imposed by Law and examples of those who carried out their duties and those who did not.

And thus, all the admonishings in the Bible fall into one Law or the Other. That is what I have seen and now know and therefore I speak from thence.

Jesus was referring to the thief on his right hand during His crucifixion. Luke 23:38-43.

The thief was obviously in the crowd and Jesus could sense the events of the day of His death.

Jude in his letter describes angels but He didn't really write about see-ing the Son of man coming in His glory. But Peter and John we know of in the Bible. undecided

The transfiguration, which was seen by Peter, John and James, bears no real resemblance to what Jesus Christ said in Matthew 16 vs 21 - 28 , so I don't agree with the reasoning that the transfiguration has to do with what Jesus Christ meant there in Matthew 16. And we have no evidence that James did indeed see the second coming before he was murdered. undecided

Think about it again in relation to Jesus’s words in Matt 16 and that on the cross in Luke 23.

He promised that the thief will meet him today in paradise. That is the only person that was promised immediate access to paradise, he received instant judgement and was vindicated.

Meanwhile Jesus himself had not gone to paradise that day but to hades to collect the keys of death.

So the thief would be among the saints who will welcome Jesus back to heaven after his journey to the hades.

But we also know that Paradise is not a place in the Kingdom of God since Jesus Christ did not ascend that day into Heaven, not into Hell, both of them in the Kingdom of God, Jesus Christ's Kingdom, on that very day. Jesus Christ did not visit Heaven or Hell before He left this earth and so paradise could not be referring to the Kingdom of God. undecided

Also, we know that no one can enter into Heaven or Hell, both of them of the Kingdom of God, until after being judged by Jesus Christ, this according to Jesus Christ - Matthew 25 vs 31 - 46. undecided

it simply means some of the disciples standing there will not die till they see him crucified and resurrected.

The resurrection of Christ marks the kingdom of God here on earth which is Christianity.

There was his resurrection, followed by 120 disciples gathering at the upper room. These were the disciples that saw God's kingdom after the great tribulation, they started Christianity.

The great tribulation was that journey Jesus Christ and his disciples embarked across the wilderness from city to city preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and they eventually ended at Jerusalem where Jesus was crucified. All these were prophesied by Daniel which Jesus made reference to, in Matthew 24

Rev 2:7 talks about paradise of God.
John3:16 says....all who believe in Jesus will have eternal life.

So the timing of the thief being in paradise was stated by Jesus himself, and I believe that regardless of what transpired between when Jesus died and when he arose the third day, the thief would have been taken care of in paradise.

the reward you are talking about is nothing else but eternal life. John 3:16.

No physical or material reward but to know that they have eternal life in their spirit by believing in Jesus Christ and followed him up to the point of crucifixion.

Those disciples who later understood this truth ran away since there was nothing to gain by abandoning all they had to the poor and followed him to Jerusalem.

It was that terrible that's why it was called the great tribulation.

Imagine you abandoning all that you have worked for to follow one man through the wilderness.

A Great Great Multitude Do Not! Even the ones who have Self Named themselves Christ Followers aka Christians.

This I have seen, even right here in Nairaland, they completely disregard and discard His Instructions.
