Sanusi back then supported subsidy removal...especially since he was CBN governor then, and had to back the government on policy.

He always has supported subsidy removal.

This is him back in 2012(Channels tv report April 15 2012)

Do we need to read what you posted for you so you can understand what you posted?

The governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Lamido Sanusi in an interview with Reuters on Friday in New York said that the current system of subsidizing fuel prices is unsustainable.

The governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Lamido Sanusi said that a sharp fall in oil prices could spell big trouble for the country.
Mr Sanusi, a former banker who specialized in risk management and who is allied with Finance Minister Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala in the push for reforms, is pushing for the complete removal of the system of subsidizing fuel.

Yes, back then he backed the complete removal of subsidies on petrol(which went further than government partial removal).

And yes, it made sense then, and sense now.

I was using the article to respond to those who seem to think he is backing subsidy removal now....when he has a record of backing it from far back.

And yes, subsidies are not sustainable. For it to be sustainable, the cost of production has to be static, as well as a lot of people's salaries, and the cost of living.

The problem with many of our leaders is they don't explain things clearly to the lay man. How would you try to remove fuel subsidy without explaining to the layman that even though he will pay more for fuel, in the long run, the government would have enough money to build/renovate refineries and upgrade our schools/universities and they will see the advantage in say 3 or 4 years. You just wake up one day and say you wanna remove fuel subsidy..
Even though people like me who understands why subsidy should be removed, the market woman would only think removing subsidy is anti people and they'll fight against it..

Buhari should just totally remove fuel subsidy once and for all. No need to fear inflation as inflation is already occurring, subsidy or not..

Campaigning for what exactly? Don't you think he's aware his own people would be against him for calling for the education of women?

A former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor, Lamido Sanusi is canvassing for the education of the girl-child and believes it is the ‘silver bullet’ to eradicating poverty in Nigeria.

Sanusi spoke on Thursday during The Platform, a programme to mark Nigeria’s 60th Independence anniversary, aired on Channels Television.

“When you look at a country like Nigeria, my sense is that the focus on the education of the girl-child and the place of the woman, are the most critical SDGs we should focus on,” the economist stated.

“If you educate a girl-child, you deal with a number of issues. You deal with the opportunities you gave to the rise of poverty, you deal with inter-generational poverty, you deal with mortality, you deal with nutrition; you deal with the education of the child because the children of educated women are more likely to be educated than the children of those who did not go to school; you deal with water and sanitation and so on.”

Sanusi explained that education of the girl-child is at the heart of development and raising the standard of living.

“So, the single silver bullet for me, that goes to the heart of underdevelopment and poverty, is educating the girl-child and providing her with an opportunity to raise against poverty,” the 14th Emir of Kano added.

Are you suggesting Deziani did not steal Nigerian money, and that the national assembly does not share quite a lot of our money amongst themselves?

If so, perhaps we should give the National Assembly occupants a pay rise.

If as an accountant he keeps playing with figures then something is wrong.

Another party is in government so why are we not hearing of the money again.

If you meet him ask him for evidence.

Things are not alright in Nigeria but he's not in anyway different from those he criticize just that Nigerians are always emotional

The Federal High Court in Abuja, on Wednesday, adjourned the corruption case involving a former Minister of Petroleum Resources, Diezani Alison-Madueke, who is believed to be in the United Kingdom (U.K)

The adjournment is the latest in the series of postponements the money laundering case has suffered due to the absence of the former minister since it (case) was filed over two years ago.

Efforts by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to have her extradited to Nigeria to face the charges have been stalled for many years.

Ijeoma Ojukwu, the trial judge, again adjourned the case on Wednesday for the EFCC to appear and report to the cour its efforts to enforce the criminal summons issued against the former minister as far back as July 2020.

Why is he not focusing on refining our petrol locally. Why should we have something and be importing it and make people pay unnecessary exorbitant price buy it. It certainly doesn't make sense!

Very true

But saying the truth in Nigeria is liable to get you abused...apparently you want the poor to suffer.

But the thing is, when you put price controls on petrol, and pay a subsidy to compensate the resulting losses, you end up with bad refineries, chronic fuel scarcity, and massive importation of fuel.

Venezuela subsidizes fuel to the point that it costs N40 per liter there....meanwhile, they are losing $18 billion annually to smuggling. Their entire petrol infrastructure is in a mess because there is no profit to fix the refineries there.

That's all I am gonna say on the matter.

The disgraced emir has spoken the truth...and FWIW he backed GEJ's attempt to remove subsidy. I did not like GEJ, or Buhari...but if GEJ had been allowed to remove subsidy in 2012...by now we would have had working refienreis, and saved billions of naira, and the value of the naira would be better.
Exactly. subsidy can not be sustained forever. when petroleum sold high under Gej, that could have been the perfect time to stop subsidy and fix the refineries, which will later in the long run, reduce the price when deregulated. we lack visionary leaders since 1960 till now.

He is guilty too. From the jumbo retirement package he and his predecessors award themselves behind us all when when retiring from CBN during their era that we don't see the CBN budget to how he ,like many of the elites, actually and still benefit directly from this unfair subsidy system. You can't act pious on this issue sir. Talk is cheap o. Ours is a completely unfair system because only the elites and urban, town and city dwellers, some of whom are even mostly idlying away online, are enjoying this so-called subsidies on petrol and electricity.

The rural dwellers without roads and electricity who are not directly benefitting from this largesse should take a class action against the FG and demand for either the subsidy be scrapped or they get a form of subsidy equivalent to the electricity and petrol subsidies their fellow citizens in the urban areas and cities are enjoying.

There must be equity and justice for the rural dwellers too. I once travelled through a large expanse of villages without roads and electricity yet they have no basic provision like water, rural health clinics , standby ambulances etc to meet their basic needs because their folks in the urban areas have stolen all the wealth as subsidy on electricity and petrol.

It is a criminally unfair system that make me cringe at the hypocrisy of urban and city dwelling citizens complaining about poverty in the hinterlands. You and I are feeding fat on their destiny for as long as they are not compensated for the long years of the subsidy they are paying for but not benefiting from.
It's daylight robbery and everyone is guilty.

FG must scrap the subsidies or give an equivalent of same to our rural dwellers.
God bless Nigeria.
