Gurnah has until his recent retirement been Professor of English and Postcolonial Literatures at the University of Kent in Canterbury, focusing principally on writers such as Wole Soyinka, James Ngugi Wa Thiong'o and Salman Rushdie.

He was born in Zanzibar in 1948 and went to Britain as a Student in 1968.

His novel "Paradise" was shortlisted for the Booker's Prize in 1994.

He's not even from there.

He's from Zanzibar.

He only lectured in BUK as an MA holder before moving to Kent for his Phd.

They only focussed on the part that he lectured in Kano to make it seem like at least one person among their teeming millions has a world-class brain.

It's pathetic.

I'd have preferred Ngugi Wa Thiong'o though. One of the greatest writers out of Africa.

Wa thiongo, and Achebe are just two of many brilliant African writers that have never won a Nobel.

When my alma Marta BUK was cosmopolitan not now that it is peopled with Kano indigines in all departments like a primary school. The BUK mafia don't even trust other northern states for appointment much less southerners. Pity
Not just BUK, almost all public Nigerian universities are like that.
