haha, you don't really know much about rail. It is an expensive shit and even with privatization, you still need be very careful else you will run at a loss. The case in hand is the UK.

It is do able, once took the rails from Aberystwyth to Nottingham and down to London in one day. Actually wept when I got to St Pancras International - a story for another day. There is so much potential in Nigeria, the multiplier effect will be massive.

I don't agree with you. True, a private company would run our rails more efficiently, still, it's a very big risk. High-speed rail is only profitable in 2 countries, Japan, and France. the problem was building them in the first place.

We can do Lagos - Ibadan and have double track, we can extend Warri - Itakpe to Abuja up to Kaduna and hand it over to private hands.

I am sure you guys will be shouting wicked government if the railway corporation charges a profitable rate.
Someone has to pay for "cheap" things.

This should be a revenue generating agency. Nigerians are Nigeria problem. The fare is not cheap compared to what's expected and the services offered. It's just that greed is worrying us as a Nation. If the story of JAMB can replicate itself here, it will be a good business for Nigeria.

The government doesn't need to privitize it. Is just to commercialize its operation. I'm aware the government is subsidizing the fare for commuters. The government can start by charging the fair value for transportation fare. As a way of ensuring that there is no leakages in financial flow of the agency, the ticketing system should be automated.
Commercialise fare again, rest be assured no elites will patronise the trains esp now that the trains aint connecting most places.
Will dangote use train from abuja to kaduna when he has his private jet?
Will el rufai use the train when he can charter jet to Abuja?
The trains r meant for middle income n low income earners, no big business man will want to spend 5hrs in a journey when he can use flight with fast arrival.
Peg the train fare at 20k and kill it finally. Shebi na bullet trains that will take u to ur destination in less time...

Okhiria said the Corporation has requested N61.5 billion as a proposal for 2022 procurement activities, which cuts across 22 budget lines. These will include procurement of spare (including lubricants) for the locomotives, coaches and wagons; Insurance of locomotives and rolling stocks; rehabilitation of track from Port Harcourt to Makurdi; maintenance of roads into stators, rest houses, workshop, chalets end operational residential quarters, among others.

In addition, they are employing a 1000 more people.

Outside the purchase and other inclusives, is it profitable venture whrn ur staff wages outweigh ur monthly revenue?

According to buhari, there r 3 functional raillines operational in Nigeria, with new coaches, lets assume they r operating on a clean slate, that's no debt profile... At the end of the year, u generate 1billion, and ur staffs salaries is 9billion naira. We aint factoring cost of maintenance and other sundry issues, u now go to ur investor that u need 60billion naira for another year to run the business. Where will the investor take money from and give u?
Meanwhile the business i gave u to manage, na loan i use take set am up, we r not even talking of repayment yet.
A sensible manager will want to make good profits, but this one is even proposing recruiting more hands to damage and cripple the already failed business

Headline readers will be shouting maintenance is 61bn, generating 1bn

While the story shows they want to bring previously moribund 700km of rail back to service, build houses, roads, new freight wagons, new coaches etc, but people we've wasted money on subsidizing their education will still swear all the above is mere maintenance not investment.

Nigerian government officials are always busy signing away Nigeria in documents. That is the reason it is even impossible for government to take back the Discos.

The penalties attached to the Disco sale contracts cannot be afforded by Nigeria, but while the crafty businessmen where able to secure fail proof contracts, Nigeria was left out in the rain.

See what happened with that thieving aluminium contract, forgotten the name. That contract was the epitome of Nigerian public officials signing outrageous contracts against Nigeria. Same was done with the Disco sale and I'm too sure same will happen to the railways if they decide to sell.

Our railways are even over priced by as much as four times the actual average build cost in West Africa, not globally o. Lol, Nigeria. No businessman will go near them unless they are sold at actual average value in West Africa or even globally.

Show where the SGR price anywhere in west Africa or Africa is a quarter of the Nigerian railway cost.

The standard price for SGR is $3 - 15m per kilometer depending on terrain and other variables and Nigeria railway cost were all within the lower third band of this range. Infact most of the other complete SGR in Africa in Kenya and Uganda are more expensive than that of Nigeria

There are project items in the N61. 5bn, not just maintenance and salaries.
Some of the N61. 5bn will yield a lot of money when spent.
The NRC has assets that may be close to N1trillion that can yield income. The FG needs to sit down and allocate the money to them after the assets are sold or commercialized.

First common sense after reading about 2 pages, we have an epidemic and it's not corruption, it's more of mass ignorance and laziness

Many articles online by Nigerian newspapers, I can't post link here to avoid ban. There are reports of contract inflation by at least 100% compared elsewhere.

Every business comes with it's own risk. Rail business is not an exception.
Thank God you agree with me that a bit of ingenuity can turn it around.
The ABJ-KAD route is a lucrative one any day. In as much as banks are getting police officers to man their branches and pay on a weekly basis, a thinking NRC management will get a workable arrangement with security forces and that route will not fail for a day!.

IBD-LAG is route is faulty in terms of pricing and station. The IBD end station is not well located. PRESENTLY at OJOO while the old station is at DUGBE. A right thinking management will reduce the fee, buy buses that transfers passangers from the closest station at OMI-ADIO and you will see that route boom on SUNDAYS, MONDAYS and FRIDAYS.

With proper control in place, the diesel and lubricant consumption will reduce by at least half when you deal with the corruption embedded in the system..
2 things here. First it would have been great if you have figure to show how profitable ABJ-KAD route is. Then we could talk about it.
Now I am not saying some crazy innovation can not turn things around in the rail sector it certainly can but you make it sound so easy in your pitch.
High speed rail is not profitable in China,USA, UK and many other countries we look up to so any one would make it profitable in 9ja has to much more than you suggested.
Our leaders made decisions in their usual lazy and corrupt manner and now all ofor us and maybe our children would pay the cost of a useless ptoject.
I really hope the private sector could take over the rails. But it's not something must businesses are looking to own.
