We have no choice

The more we spend on subsidising fuel, the more we prevent the investment in more refinereis plus we put new refineries like Dangote refinery at risk of failing by forcing them to operate at a loss a la subsidy

If we had removed this thing in 2012 by now the worst would have been over

Nigeria can no longer afford subsidy. It has to go.

P.S. Any objectors to this post should read about subsides and why they damage economies.

It is the people that should bear the burnt of government inepititude? So why is our refineries not working? Shebi they are borrowing money to build railways that are not doing well economically. Why can't they borrow to also fix our refineries?

The issue with subsidy is because we are importing our own fuel back here isn't it? So therefore we should stop that and make our refineries work.

The people won't be the own to suffer for government inepititude. This is not an APC or PDP thing. This is about common sense.

It's very obvious Nigeria is governed by demons disguising as leaders, it's only demonic agents that can churn out the amount of hardship these guys are heaping on us on a daily basis. A little bit of empathy and some bit of intelligence is what's needed to remedy the ills that has eaten Nigeria's up, but it's quite unfortunate that the people in power lack these qualities.

The refinereis are not working because the price control inherent in subsides meant that therr wasnt enough profit to keep them running well.

Also because the salaries of refinery workers not being dependnet on profits from the refinery meant that workers could sabotage the refinery and nothing would happen

Finally subsides make refining fuel in this country unprofitable. Who wants to refine fuel at N200 and above and sell at N162 per liter? Thats why we have at least 20 licences for refinreis that habe not been developed. ( dangote can afford to develop a refinery because the banks were willing to give him a loan)

And as the cost of refining fuel goes up so does the money spent subsidising it. That means more debt for us in the long term.

If you look at only removing subsidy without looking at the effect and how to mitigate it ,the country may breakdown completely driven by poverty and insecurity. A country is not a business enterprise and all factors must be considered.

My thoughts on subsidy is that it should be retained, at least the masses should at least benefit something. The roads are bad, no train passes through my LGA, we provide our own water, and so on...

If funds are being frittered in the name of presidential air fleet for the benefit of less than 0.00001% of the populace, pointless yearly villa renovation, aso rock kitchen, pointless junketing over the world, then the massages deserve something.

The people running the whole thing are the problem, the devils.

There is a talk of subsidy is basically subsidizing the rich who have multiple cars, this is Hogwash, when it is removed, the villager who has no car will feel it when he needs to buy foodstuff, household items or pay school fees.

Mind you, it is only dangote's refinery we are waiting on and it won't solve half the need, while there are talks of giving him right of important.

APC will always complain.

These same people said there was nothing like subsidy under PDP. " Subsidy was a scam. Crude oil sold for $100 under PDP for 16 years".

Now APC, the most useless political party in Africa is complaining as Crude oil approaches same $100 per barrel.

What has changed ?

Evil government.

The only real people that benefit from subsidies are those with fuel import license and those that smuggle fuel in and out of Nigeria.

The masses benefit nothing. It's penny wise pound foolish. You enjoy 'cheap fuel' at the expense of every other infrastructure a sane society should have.

If that happens, the cost of products and services will skyrocket which will lead to hyper inflation.

We must get it right in 2023.

How many times are they going to remove subsidy, BUHARI'S led administration has removed subsidy for more than 3 times, yet nothing changes.

when we are not helping ourselves,

during Gej, when price is high we maintain the same pump price, even when it's low too,

but this bubu govt had taken us for a jolly ride, when it's low, they increased the price, and when it's high they still increasing it,

yet we keep mute, hoping on GOD,

when shall we take the bull by its horn, and say enough is enough,?

There is nothing like getting it right come 2023. We r left with 2 demonic options, atiku and tinubu. Both r stark criminals, thieves without sympathy.

We need leaders in all spheres who will sacrifice their services for the sake of our future, otherwise we will be doom as a country.
Removing subsidy if atall there is now will aggravate the entire economy and collapse little gains they have made sofar.
nNpc needs to come out with strict measures to curb smuggling.
TheY should peg daily consumption at 30million litres.
With these measures, underrecovery or subsidy will be minimal.
Cos even if they stop the subsidy payment, how much will be saved?
Will the amount saved stop fed govt fro borrowing to fund the budget?
Won't the governors also demand that the monies saved be shared amongst the three tiers of govt?
At the end we the common masses without people in either civil or public service will be left out from whatever monetary adjustment either tier of govt will make.
With fuel selling at 165 naira against the unregulated 350 or so, all nigerians r atleast carried along.
My take....

You want subsidy removed without a refinery that is fully operational or even partly operational? Does that make sense to you?

Even if that will be considered, they have to stabilise the naira, you can't have naira at an all time low and then remove subsidy. Lots of business will go out of operation and the economy will collapse totally.

What you will get at the end is what happened on Lebanon and Zimbabwe, Hyperinflation!

Is there any law that prohibits the govt from using the funds budgeted for their frivolities in putting this "infrastructure" in place before attacking the subsidy?

Well considering that Lebanon and Zimbabw hyperinfaltion is caused by their not earning enough foreign exchange whereas subsidy removal would lead to us earning more foreign exchange and an improvement in the value of the naira and by extension reduced inflation long term. .....

Either we remove subsidy or we take loans to replace the money we spend on subsidies

Critics of the Buhari's failed administration are often viewed as enemies for pointing out his shortcomings.

To refresh our memories, in 2015 in one of his numerous dummies he sold to the electorates, he promised to build new refineries and fix existing ones.

Six years down the line, he has woefully failed to do that!

If he had kept that promise, we as a nation would have been smiling to the bank with the current oil windfall.

To make matters worse, he "crowned" himself minister of petroleum resources.

What a calamity to have befallen us!

Oil which ought to be a blessing is now a curse!

Two wrongs done make a right. We should stop "subsidizing" anything at all. Because in the long run it tends to do more harm than good. If you want to see real growth and development, then tell the government to hands off electricity and fuel.

It'll be more expensive initially, but you tend to enjoy a better and progressively cheaper service. This short term thinking isn't going to help. As a nation we must begin to plan 5-10 years ahead. It's not okay to pay subsidy today and go broke tomorrow.

It's complete lunacy that a country that exports crude oil will earn less money when the price of crude oil increases globally. It's the direct opposite of common sense.

Price of.fuel in benin and togo is around N380 to 420 naira equivalent

Removing subsidy will take us to their level price wise

Ghana too charges above N400 for one liter of fuel

Energy crisis is something that we can't avoid. It's unavoidable actually. We are on our way to face it and it will be really harsh for us. That;s why lots of countries nowadays try to think about something that can possibly replace traditional methods of supplying energy to humanity. The great example here is solar panels and generators. The sun is almost an endless source of energy, however we know that day always replaces the night and vice versa, hence we should think about something that can handle this task at nights. Actually, traditional source of energy are almost run out themselves, so I'm sure we will face real crisis in future.
