The Vice-President of Nigeria, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, has called for the assistance of orphans across the country, saying there is a need to serve humanity.

Osinbajo noted that being an orphan does not determine the greatness of a child’s future. He said many great men in Nigeria and the world are orphans, hence the need to help children in the orphanage.

The VP stated this at the inauguration of a charity and social development centre, called Dorian Home in Akure, the Ondo State capital, on Thursday. The centre was built by a philanthropist, Dr Tolulola Bayode.

According to him, the number of widows and orphans in Nigeria has increased due to insecurity issues such as violence and clashes in many parts of the country.

Osinbajo said, “We are confronted with a huge challenge. In 2015, the Federal Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development estimated that there were about 17.5 million orphans and vulnerable children in a nation of about 200 million people. That is close to nine per cent of the population. Sadly, this number has increased over the years due to violence, conflicts, communal clashes in different parts of the country.

“There is a large number of widows and vulnerable women and again due to conflicts in different parts of the country, the number has grown. Millions of orphaned children need spaces to grow and to thrive and ensure that their physiological needs are met, a place where they are cared for and trained. The women after harrowing situations also need spaces where they can begin to rebuild; that is why places like Dorian Home initiatives are needed.”

In his remarks, the Ondo State Governor, Mr Rotimi Akeredolu, said the newly inaugurated humanitarian project would complement the good agenda of his administration.

Represented by his deputy, Mr Lucky Aiyedatiwa, the governor said, the Dorian Home “would have the total support the Ondo State Government.”

The founder of the humanitarian centre, Dr Tolulola Bayode, explained that the state-of-the-art building would accommodate motherless babies, games, a dining hall, a decent kitchen, women training hall among other features to develop the skills of the orphans in the home.

Nothing that insecurity can't affect really, how tackle it matter, the government is trying her bit but it is seriously not enough, community policing is the main approach to reduce insecurity, all state governors should have their security outfits, after all, the monthly fund for security votes is enough to implement this.

There wont even be Idleness if there is security in the land but of course Nigerians will still blame devil for every devilish act carried out by them like these heartless people that stole 970 railway sleepers embarassed lipsrsealed

No one prays to be orphan, widow, or widower but most of this is a result of insecurity of our land and it is a responsility of all to rise and assist those in that situation

This is a very commendable step taken by Dr Bayode. This problem is linked to insecurity which if solved can reduce the rising number of orphans, widows and vulnerable women. If other states or individuals can also follow in this footstep, their accommodation, education, feeding and skill acquisition can be well catered for thereby serving as important figures to themselves and their environment.

Why can’t he then move to implement state policing? Why can’t he suggest a bill to the senate to make state policing happen?

Orphans generally are integral part of any society that needs to be taken care of specially. You never can tell the level of exploits embedded in them

If to say na only increase in orphans & widows, e for good na.
Insecurity does far more serious damage & affects every facet of the economy. Unfortunately the government of the day is treating it with kid gloves because the President's kinsmen are largely involved.

Very true.
I condemn in strong terms the activities of bandits, kidnappers, Boko haram and of lately IPOB-ESN who have been killing bread winners of families.

We all need to join hands and flush out this elements in our society. Nobody should support them. My heart bleeds when I see ignorant people supporting IPOB specifically. Those people don't mean well for the east. As they go about killing Police men who are igbos just like them. How can a brother kill his fellow brother? We understand that Boko haram and bandits in the North are guys from Mali and Niger but how about IPOB are they from Israel? What is the motive behind them killing their own brothers?

We all must condemn the activities of the terrorists living among us in the East and other part of Nigeria.

Ok prof u are right but the corruption of your kind ( politicians) have rendered majority of parents penniless thereby exposing the children to the nature of orphans.. as a pastor please preach to your boss ,even if he won't give his life to Christ at least let him give his life to good service to humanity ..God owns every life ,u don't have any right to live the way u desires but to submit to the righteousness of your maker ,this is common sense most people don't have..repent today and yield to the righteousness of Christ
