The only power or authority recognised in Nigeria is the Constitutional authority of democratically elected public office holders.
The Constitution of Nigeria does not recognize the existence of any traditional ruler's authority and most especially, it DOES NOT RECOGNISE ANY AUTHORITY BASED ON RELIGION.

Section 10 of the Nigerian Constitution provides:

"The Government of the Federation or of a State shall not adopt any religion as State Religion."

The Sultan of Sokoto has to be given a certificate of office before he can function and if he misbehaves, that certificate can be revoked.
