HEAVILY armed troops of the Nigerian Army and men of the Nigerian Police Force are patrolling the streets of Awka and other parts of Anambra State ahead of the November 6 governorship election.

The ICIR observed that armed security agents were positioned in strategic locations in different parts of the south-eastern state.

The governorship poll is holding amid threats posed by pro-Biafra separatists who have declared an intention to stop the Nigerian government from conducting elections in territories of the defunct Republic of Biafra.

A pro-Biafra group the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has threatened to lock down Anambra and other parts of the South-East by ordering a sit-at-home for six days - including the day of the election - if its detained leader Nnamdi Kanu is not released.

It is unlikely that the Nigerian government will release Kanu, and there are concerns that the secessionists may attempt to disrupt the election by attacking voters and electoral officials.

The Nigerian government has vowed to go ahead with the election with President Muhammadu Buhari ordering heads of the country's security agencies to ensure the success of the poll at all costs.

The ICIR learnt that the strategy adopted by Nigeria's military and Police authorities towards ensuring the success of the election included deployment of an 'overwhelming' number of heavily armed security personnel in Anambra State.

The Nigerian Police said they had deployed over 34,000 officers for the poll.

In Awka on November 3, The ICIR observed that heavily armed security operatives were controlling traffic at some busy locations in the state capital.

While their armed colleagues directed vehicular movement, combat-ready soldiers and policemen stood on the alert with their hands on the trigger of their guns.

In an apparent show of force, mobile units of the Army and the Police were conducting a 'round the clock' patrol of Awka and other parts of Anambra.

Siren-blaring patrol vans loaded with heavily armed troops and policemen were touring the state.

* Anxiety grips residents

However, despite the threat of violence hanging over the election, The ICIR observed on November 3 that residents of Awka were moving about their normal activities.

Offices, shops and markets were open, and private and commercial vehicles plied the streets.

Large numbers of residents were seen at busy locations such as Aroma Junction and Unizik Junction.

Major markets in Onitsha and Nnewi were also open.

But The ICIR also observed that some residents were worried about the election.

Militarization of the state will scare people from voting. This is a wrong strategy, unless the government has perfected plans to rig the polls. Dialogue is always the solution not war.

In ONDO the army has left their ROADS.....at the mercy of FULANI BANDITS.....their obsession is IPOB.

All we want is a peaceful election in Anambra state. Anambrarians are our fellow countrymen and we want them to elect their governor in an atmosphere that is peaceful and devoid of intimidation. If INEC get it right in Anambra, it is a good sign that they will get it right in 2023. BTW, Muslims, Christians and traditional worshipers in Yoruba are the same.

Nigeria needs more armed forces.

It is within the powers of the president to declare marshall law, if need be. Democracy was birthed by blood, we can't allow a few hoodlums scare us...they will have to shed their blood.

Heavy gunships is now an hobby, a tool in the hand of a cobbler who can mend a shoe which won't change it's shape. Politics is for the giant minds, who won't mind to find any crook to do the do, so far he'd seat and look.
Elections are for the masses but the masses are afraid to seek a redemption, they stayed glued to an African magic, that never goes but the elections mends the societal rise.

Go over your post again & read what you wrote. A singer should know if his lyrics is bad or good.

Afonjas are at the mercy of Fulanis? But your own very people are at the mercy of IPOB/ESN/UGM. With your own hands, you murder your people daily (your glorious sons are becoming extinct) & you still have audacity to point fingers & call others different names.

As far as I'm concerned, this Anambra State election is done and dusted! We already know Prof Chukwuma Soludo has won the election. Every other thing is just to fulfil all righteousness.

The only cause for worry is the APC-led federal government that would want to use the security apparatus to disenfranchise people from voting their preferred candidate, thereby engaging in massive rigging in favor of their candidate, Andy Uba. And I hope ndi Anambra would resist any attempt to do that. You guys should take a cue from ndi Edo State.

You pamper these people too much. I don't want the election to be peaceful, they can kill themselves for all I care, people who wish evil on others don't deserve the message of love you're preaching here

If you want to embark on sit at home, then fine. Don't force people not to vote and don't attack anybody. I know IPOB has made it known that they only declared sit at home. It is good that IPOB has made their position known to the world that they are not going to force anybody not to vote. This election is a trap. If you force people not to vote, IPOB will start losing support globally.

I also understand that some people may like to cause problem and link it to IPOB just to discredit the group.

When would Nigeria adopt intelligence based policing instead of brute force? All these security presence would only discourage voters while making making the locals more apprehensive of the security forces whom they consider an army of occupation.

Igbos are too chicken-hearted to tackle the Nigerian corporate existence. The only people capable of sending the government packing in Nigeria is the North. Those guys have no value for human life and likewise their life. Igbos are worse, they will think of their mothers, wives (they too like women) all these factors makes them weak.
