Delta State Police Command has arrested a serial ATM snatcher and fraudster in Ozoro, Isoko North Local Government Area of the state.

Spokesperson of the command, DSP Bright Edafe, in a statement on Tuesday November 9, said the suspect, Ojo Amos, 38, of Agbara- Otor, Ughelli North LGA, specializes in stealing ATM cards from unsuspecting victims.

"On 2/11/2021 at about 1300hrs, upon a tip-off that the suspect was seen in a POS Stand located beside a bank in Ozoro branch, the DPO Ozoro Division detailed operatives who swung into action in conjunction with the chairman Olotu vigilante in Ozoro. They were deployed to the scene and arrested the suspect. 33 ATM cards and a cash sum of Fifty thousand Naira (#50,000) were recovered from him," DSP Edafe stated.

The suspect confessed that he stole one of the cards from one Rufai Abdulahi at a bank, in Kwale and left immediately. He said he later withdrew the sum of two hundred and fifty thousand naira (#250,000) from the victim account.

The statement said ,"preliminary investigations later revealed that the suspect usually stays behind his victims at the ATM machine waiting and targeting people who he feels are not too educated, old women/children and once he notice that they are having problem operating the ATM machine, he moves closer to them pretending to be a bank staff trying to help them and in the process he swaps the ATM card,"

The suspect also confessed that he watches them as they enter their ATM pins, memorizes it and after swapping the ATM cards, he uses either a POS stand or ATM machine to empty their bank accounts. He said he has been doing this for the past four years.

The Commissioner of Police Delta State CP Ari Muhammed Ali, while urging members of the public to be law abiding also advice that they learn from the cases regularly reported by the command and also for them to be vigilant when making use of their ATM cards and ensure that only uniform bank staff be allowed to assist them when the need arises.

Someone close to me have experienced this, so what they usually do, is go to Atm that have a lot of people, they usually works in pair and take advantage of older men or woman.
If the atm is crowded and maybe there is another atm that is there but it's unavailable or doesn't have money in them, this thieves will approach their target maybe from the back of the line and tell them to try this Atm that staff have added money to it or it's working, their unsuspected victim will agree maybe due to the long queue or the person is in a rush.
The fraudster will stand near the person as he or she is putting his atm, sometimes the victim will cover the atm to hide his or her pin but that wont stop the fraud, he can even turn like he is not interested in what the victim is doing
Anyway when the Atm doesn't work obviously, the fraudster acting like a concern person will take the atm from the victim and start acting like he is cleaning it so the atm will work then he will tell the victim to look at the camera and put the atm in.
In this process of the victim looking at the camera, the fraudster could have swap the atm with the Same bank atm and he will put his own atm in the atm machine by himself telling the victim to look at the camera so the atm can work.
Then he will form making a call or something, then he leaves with your card, his partner comes for the part 2 where he will act like he want to use this atm and tell you to hurry up, this time you might not suspect once you put your pin, the partner take note of it and leave, some times you might even hide it but once the Atm machine start saying incorrect pin ( because it's the fraudster atm that is there), the partner might tell you to put your pin very well, you been comfuse might even allow him to see you putting your pin.

And when he got your pin, he will walk away, after many attempts at your end, you will remove your card, some times many doesn't notice that that is not their card, sometimes they do notice but before anything can be done, they could have withdraw a lot from Pos stands.
So be careful guys, many have fallen victim to this
