I am also having this kind of problem with d kids I teach. Most of them are 5-6yrs old and are trying in reading but the ones that are 8yrs cannot pronounce two letter words...I dont even know what todoagain because I have tried all I know.

Teach the sounds for each letter of the alphabet first. There are fun videos and music on YouTube to help with this.

Then, teach them how to blend two letters, three letters etc

Then move on to sight words. They should go over this again and again for emphasis sake. The more they learn this, the more familiar with the words they become.

Good luck trying.

My daughter is 5 years plus. She's in grade 1 but she can't read. Except few two letter words like 'it go to... I'm worried cos most of the time, her mum would have to read her home works to her before she could answer them. I know with time, she will catch up.

Early last month ,I complained to my wife that my 3-year old son couldn't write anything(Even number 1) despite the fact that he have been registered into a school as early as 2 years old .Because of this ,I have to challenge my wife and my son Aunty that they have been doing nothing to help my son .I told them I have been wasting my money to pay school fee when he should have stayed at home/shop with his mum while we use the school fee/money for other things at home .

Yesternight ,I went home. (I work in Lekki/live on mainland and I go home two or three times a week).I woke up this morning and I brushed his tooth/ took his bath for him .I dressed for him and served him breakfast .Later ,I asked him to bring a pen and his book which he did .I later asked him to write 1 2 3 for me .To my surprise ,my little boy wrote 1 to 30 uninterrupted and I was so shocked because I was expecting him to even stop at 10 .I mean I was so surprised .

After writing ,he said dad I want to draw my mum,he put on some sketches and later said dad,I will draw you now .

Seriously ,I am so happy right now and I am so proud as a father .I am planning to do a transfer of some token to his aunty when I get my salary and also give his mum a compensation of #20,000 for a job well done ..

That's where phonics comes into play.
secondly too,how you handle and interacts with them matters too.

My son is 4 yrs old he reads excellently well.he reads the Bible too without aids.

Get her a sound phonic teacher who's passionate with her work, not those who're interested only in collecting their wages at the end of 12th times in a month.

I would suggest she starts with the phonics sounds to make it pretty fast and easier for her.

Always pay attention to your kids, he just proved you wrong Sir , pay attention to them so that if leg is paining them you wouldn't think it's hand, And you said you are a proud dad well done ehh..! You that don't even know your child can write 1- 30 all your mind was he might just write 123 because the way you rated him.

That child might be the type of child that don't show his/ herself anywhere they find themselves but never underestimate such child oo...

Even if say am yet to get married but at least I do get time for kids when ever they are around me... Eg my nieces and nephews and other kids included..

Wow...they know their phonics sounds, theyeven sing it too but their problem is application.

first teach her letter A_Z in phonics, then start two letter words using phonics, honestly it's the easiest way to teach children how to read, my 4 years old daughter is very good at that, though phonics is being used in their school, infact, they will personally tell parents to learn that A_Z in order not to mislead the children when given Homework.
They all know the phonics sound but most of them ant apply it to real use.

Don't rush them after teaching them try giving them some time before asking them to give you what you taught them then also try to do associative teaching use very similar examples... teaching no easy that's y the reward dae heaven
No be small...me i donne tire because nobody told me I would be taking a primary school class that can't read because their scheme of work is well planned and is for reading students.

Sometimes to teach children can be discouraging especially when it seems like no progress is made...I remember when I was taking my class on learning 5×table, I decided to teach them by playing a game where by we add five to each corresponding number, then when I told them to recite it later some actually did well but some were like 5×1=5, 5×2=10, 5×3= 8, 5×4=5(with cute innocent voice)....omo I just kept quiet for sometime because I promised myself not to get angry that day, so after so a few minutes I corrected the child.
