Update from

A video revealing when a SS3 student was seen showing his friend the injuries he sustained after he was brutalised by a naval officer at the Nigerian Navy Secondary School, Abeokuta, Ogun State is trending online.

A Facebook user, Vivian Madu, had shared the video, saying:
This inhuman and degrading treatment was meted out to an SS 3 student of Nigerian Navy Secondary School Abeokuta under the watch of a female Commandant Mrs Jecinta Uche Asetuebube by a Sub Lt Rollins Okoji. When the Commandant was first contacted she denied the video because the victims nickname is NDA but further investigation revealed that this happened sometime before the end of the last term.

But, the Nigerian Navy headquarters has reacted to the incident, telling parents “to avoid recycling these sorts of materials in order not to create tension and ill feelings.”

According to a statement by the Nigerian Navy Director of Information, Commodore Suleiman Dahun, the video had been sent to the management of the school by a parent who did not specify when the incident happened or the person involved.

Dahun, however, stated that a preliminary investigation had revealed that “the incident took place 2 sessions ago,” adding that it was handled administratively.

”For the avoidance of doubt, further investigation is ongoing on the matter,” he assured, adding that the Nigerian Navy was mindful of the need to uphold discipline in her schools without recourse to unorthodox method.

Siggy reports that the video is coming at a time the Ogun State Government is warning schools to desist from using corporal punishment to instill discipline on pupils.

Recently, the Ogun State Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Professor Abayomi Arigbabu, said the State frowns at any form of punishment that inflicts injuries on students.

There's a fine line between correctional punishment/discipline and violence

Eweeeyyyy!

Just like one I video I saw in AIT news where a set of senior students were slapping and kicking junior students who couldn't fight back because it would be worse. These sort of punishments should be frowned upon and the villains should be brought to book

My God!
In her defense that it was two sessions ago..
So that makes it right two sessions ago?

Whatever his offence was, that was too much, haba! Na human being o, somebody's child.

And the fact that he showed it to his girlfriend speaks volume.

Parents you need to show your children love, they need to feel safe and protected by you, else why would he be given such injuries and not go straight home.

If na my pikin, even if na the comandant wey beat am, you go collect from me o, I no care how.

You beat pesin till you turn em back to front, Asif them give am ribs for back haba mana!

So much aggression. Sad... cry

Asides the fact that this was a navy officer, I believe the idea of hitting people generally starts from our homes/schools. Anyone who grew up being hit by thier parents/teachers wouldn't have any problem hitting others. In Africa, it's normal to hit a kid provided one doesn't over-do it, but the issue is, who says what "over-do" is in this case? Is there a clear line? Some teachers even take pride in being dreaded. Spare the rod and spoil the child doesn't mean you literally need to hit the child with a rod. It simply means you should know when to punish a kid and not to give in to all thier demands. You can be strict without hitting people like animals. Only those who lack creative ways of maintaining discipline or those who didn't start early enough resort to hitting kids.
