During my days , a senior will walk in with an empty bucket and ask us junior students to "garnish it" meaning put garri, sugar, milk, bournvita, kuli kuli etc, para venture we don't have, na serious beating

Not to talk of pocket money those miscreants collect from us on a daily basis.

Fetching water for senior students na the worst, them go give you like 10 buckets

I have seen first hand where an ss3 student used a machete (Langa Langa) to flog a student putting on just boxers .

After my JSS3 nobody tell me before I carry my two legs jakpa never to return again

This is Nigeria. That school will still want to maintain their integrity when they had none. This is a school that released a disclaimer claiming Sylvester only died playing football and if not that the parent release the video of how the boy died, they will still be talking nonsense.

My sentiments exactly. The guy was wrong, but the woman was also wrong. If she had spoken out when her son was bullied, Sylvester would still be alive. She is just as culpable as the man.

I wondered how he got into the meeting too. He thought he could free himself by saying the school has a poor monitoring system and also him not in the school anymore. Everything now bounced on him.

This very disturbing news of what happened at Dowen College is one of the direct results of adopting a western approach to discipline in many private schools in the country.

I mean, the principal assures the students that they cannot be canned. And the students become so nonchalant and rude to their teachers.

Am I in any way saying that kids should be beaten at will, upon every misgiving? Of course, no!

But when students bask in knowing that they can't be punished for their misdeeds, the teachers can do no better. In fact, it becomes more problematic when the teachers aren't too well paid and they have to curry the favour of parents. The consequence is that they overindulge the students just to please their parents.

This is very sad I cried Slyvester has died just like that. This counselor didn’t try one bit, if he spoke out when he noticed all these it won’t get to this level.

The culprits shouldn’t be allowed to go freely. Slyvester should get the justice he deserves. His death is just a terrible one.

Each set of dormitories (on each floor) needs an adult overseer.

Also, any student who reports should be protected and taken seriously when he reports a subsequent case which arises as retaliation for his initial report.

Bullies must be punished regardless of their parents’ status.

It is ironical that they are addressing bullying but went on to override this man who was making a good point on the erroneous design of dormitories in the school. How can you allow kids so much free rein in a boarding school. You are inviting chaos. They must be monitored like prisoners, especially because children have the capacity to be both vulnerable and extremely wicked.

God bless you my brother. She left what she could have done & start blaming the poor counsellor. That's women unnecessarily out burst & sentiments. She should equally be arrested for concealing the vital info as well.

The issue of bullying in hostels has become a norm that the hostel masters do not take it as something to be really bothered about. It should never be taken lightly.
I remember those days in FGC Ilorin ...only those who have gone through the system would know you have to be on your toes when you have a ward in the hostel.

If this woman had spoken out with this energy she is using now to shout on the counselor (whom I don't necessarily blame bc how could he have spoken when he was an employee), Sly may just be alive.

Bully, gay and lesbian have always been in the boarding from time. My concern is the fact that we now have parents who are so quick of abandoning their parenting responsibility.

I'm not against boarding but I believe strongly is for parents who are no time at all for their kids. What we see today is so sad that parents get so tired quickly of their roles as parents. I know lots of people that drop their kids in boarding for just no reason other than the boy will disturb in the house.

For me this case is an eyes opener for parents. We all have major roles as parents and we should stop running away from our responsibilities for no just reason.

So what was the resolution there?

The other woman calling out the counsellor could have done a great job like the woman whose son was in that Deeper life school called them out and dragged those culpable to Court before they killed her son for her.

I'm certain another student would not experience that kinda treatment in that school ever again.

If you're a school owner, please take good care of the students. Rich kids watch what obtains in British and American schools where all sorts of bullying goes on and they feel cool doing same like some gangsters.

Why did you not say it so that people would not make the mistake of taking our children..I have been crying since on Thursday[b] when I saw this video. I have not eaten. I have not drank. I have not slept.[/b] A child has died. That boy was 11 years. Same age with my son. It could have been my son that died. I was lucky. Sylvester wasn't lucky.
