Ijaw is not a culture, it is a cooperative of cultures, and most of those cultures are not 'ijaw'. Which is why Ijaw people have struggled to find a word that sums up all the groups because many of them don't accept the name Ijaw.
They have gone by Izon
They have gone by Oru (which many Igbos are also Oru as it means one who lives by water)
and now 'Niger Delta' seems to be the next move.

This is why you won't see people answering Ijaw names, rather David Benson, Edwin Peters etc. The culture is long gone. You will not see anyone speaking the language other than people trying to 'revive Ijaw language'. When Ijaw speak their own language, none of the people they're claiming can hear them. Except 3 local governments in Bayelsa. They have even gone as far as trying to claim Ndoni who speak 100% Igbo and have never denied it.

So in the name of 'Niger Delta'
They (the Ijaw groups that makes up 3 local government in Bayelsa)
have claimed Efik (A larger tribe with them)
Ibibio (A larger tribe than them)
and others.
They have even decided that they are the 3rd largest trying in the south. Bigger than Edo, bigger than Efik, bigger than Ibibio.

Those who live near them and know them well such as Bini, Urhobo, and Itshikiri have also been claimed by those ones have fought back by gunfire and Ijaw have retreated back to the 3 sparsely populated local governments they occupy. Most Ibibio and Efik don't know they are being claimed online by people in Bayelsa who don't share a language, culture, or history with them.
