The implication is simple, if u did your registry marriage (also called court marriage) in anywhere that is not a Local Government Marriage Registry, you are not properly married, that certificate is not valid. You need to go to Local Government and do the authentic marriage. I have been telling my friends who preferred Federal Marriage Registry that my lawyer told me that only LGA has powers to conduct marriages and issue certificate of marriage in law.

The implications of this judgment is too big to comprehend. It is not just the Ikoyi registry but all the registries. In other words, most court marriages in Nigeria have been invalidated. The consequent legal Armageddon will be dangerous if the judgment is upheld.

Legally I know that marriages conducted by local govts are meant to be the most genuine. How can someone not born or bred in Lagos go to Ikoyi to do registry when there's a local govt close to him/her in the state of origin? Some aren't from LGs closer to Ikoyi sef! What ll be the fate of previous marriages conducted Ikoyi? What's the state of those that v fixed dates before this mess is cleared? Nigeria just be like a condemned nation for no-improvement!
