Just thinking aloud here. Nigeria spent $500 Million acquiring 6 super tocano jets from the US to combat the insurgency in the Northeast.

$500 million can buy 100 Bayraktar TB2 combat drones at a price of $5 million each.

Isn’t It cost effective for us? I mean these drones have a 24hour endurance flight with a good range. We could saturate the skies over Sambisa and maintain a siege on these jihadist.

Considering that we need to maintain 24hours surveillance of operational theater and forward operation support, don’t you think the combat drones are better suited than the tocano?

Bayraktar drones will come in handy when boko haram decide to invade and carry out attacks in their thousands and in heavy duty military tanks and trucks.
For now , they are spread out thin in multiple fronts and carry out their attacks in barely a dozen gun trucks at a time.
Fighting such enemy with drones will require a lot of investment in manpower and munition.
The bayraktar drones came into prominence in all out wars between Armenia-Azerbaijan war and recently Ethiopia-Tigray.
These are battle fronts where the enemies deploy heavy war machinery and thousands of men.
Boko haram will not engage in such manner. The last time they did, their body count was fatal.

You are right. A10 warthog has proven beyond any reasonable doubt to be an effective attack plane. It has a fantastic precision and it's support capability is next to nothing ... I just hope NAF can acquire that against Boko Haram and also not abuse it.

its more effective in terms of precision and accuracy, it's cheaper to maintain and run, it can fly up to 27 hours at a speed of 250 km/h and can be very hard to detect by radar systems, and makes it more difficult to be targeted by anti aircraft guns.

150km is quite a distance. We could swarm the theater with these drones as support to ground troops, attack enemies hardened Defence lines, cut of their resupply lines, knock out their 4x4 trucks with mounted AAG, and maintain 24/7 aerial coverage of “active” theaters.

The problem with our troops is that they don’t know what’s ahead of them. They don’t get active intel on enemy locations and Defence structures . And a lot of times our FOB are just sitting ducks waiting to be run over by this jihadist arriving in bikes and 4x4.

We have 6 tocano jets.. and several active theaters of engagement with the jihadists. Don’t you think we could have gotten more drones with the same value and spread the drones across these theaters of engagement?
