Professor Akintola should understand that:
January 1 is the first day of the New Year of the secular calendar. Christians mark the secular New Year, more because of their acceptance of the secular State, than because it is a Christian festival. Whereas, Christianity distinguishes between faith and State, and recognises the secular State - a distinction which Islam neither makes nor accepts; whereas, the lives and activities of Christians living in a secular State are guided and ordered by the calendar of the secular State; hence, it is only logical, and convenient, for Christians to sometimes organise themselves around key dates on the calendar of the secular State.
Christianity has her own New Year, which actually varies with sects and denominations (i.e., the Anglican, Orthodox and Catholic all have their own calendar and New Year). E.g., it may interest Prof Akintola to know that today (January cool is Christmas day on the calendar of the Orthodox Church, an indication that December 25 (the most popular Christmas date) is actually the date of the feast of Christmas on the Secular calendar, and not necessarily so on all “Christian calendars “; and a further indication that, the Christian feast of Christmas, is not universally celebrated on the same day, or even at all, throughout Christendom - some Christian sects do not celebrate Christmas.
He is a Muslim today by the magnanimity, grace and liberalism of those he refers to as “British slave masters”. I need not remind Prof Akintola of what the religious outlook of Nigeria of today would have been, had the British been as illiberal as the Muslim slave masters!
