Prof. Attahiru Jega, a former Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has slammed the National Assembly over the content of the  Electoral Act Amendment Bill, especially on the issue of spending limit for political parties.

Section 88 of the bill raised the spending limit for the presidential election from N1 billion to N15 billion – a 1,400 per cent increase. The campaign expenditure limit for the governorship election was raised by 2,400 per cent – from N200 million to N5 billion. Senatorial election was raised from N40 million to N1.5 billion, House of Representatives from N20 million to N500 million, and State House of Assembly from N10 million to N50 million.
Speaking during a Town Hall meeting on Electoral Bill 2021 organised by Channels Television on Sunday, Jega said by raising the maximum amount political parties are permitted to spend in elections, the action of the National Assembly will further entrench the phenomenon of ‘money politics’ in the country.
In the meeting monitored by Daily Independent correspondent, Jega wondered where the national assembly expects a presidential candidate to get N15 billion for campaign, saying the national assembly is turning Nigeria’s democracy to plutocracy, the government of the rich.
While calling on the national assembly to urgently address the spending limit clause, Jega said it will discourage those who do not have money to participate in politics.
He said “It is a very important issue. Where is a presidential candidate going to get N15 billion to run for election or a governor to get N5 billion? Unless you are Dangote or Otedola where you can use your own money”.
“So, what they are doing is that they are turning our democracy into plutocracy- government of the rich, for the rich and by the rich. So, it is a very serious problem. On the one hand you said you are including women and people with disability on the other hand, you are saying those who want to contest need to have a lot of money to be able to contest for a particular office”.
“It is a terrible contradiction and frankly, if people are serious, we have been talking a lot about reducing the influence of money in politics. But what they are doing through legislation is to actually make it more difficult for those who do not have money to be able to contest for office”.
“Left to me, this may be another thing that within the next 10 days, they should be able to really curtail”.

Nonsense talk.

If not for overspending, how would some ever be in the National Assembly? If not for wealthy backers, how did PMB who told us that he could not purchase his form, contest and win? If not for overspending how did some become governors and got enslaved by their sponsors or godfathers?

How many of them accounted for the humongous amounts spent to get into offices? Where there receipts or invoices presented as evidence of spending within the limits? Who asked them for records? How did Jega check the limits of spending in his tenure? Does it matter that NASS increased the spending limits? What difference does it make when it is an open secret that politicians spend billions to get into positions?

Suddenly Jega presents himself as a saint or someone on a rescue mission. He actively participated to inflict this country with the hardship and suffering people experience presently.

For me he should simple close his mouth and enjoy whatever benefits that were given to him in 2015.

This is the mess and rubbish that the looting and evil party called PDP drafted for our nation.
We hope this set of assembly members correct the anomaly.

According to Wikipedia in 2008 Obama campaign spent $730m while his opponent the late senator John McCain spent $330m.

That is over $1bn . Convert that to Naira exchange rate in 2008 - per NL post cited below https://www.nairaland.com/498412/nigeria-exchange-rates-dollar-history

1.060* 171 = N181.26bn - this is 2008 o

And somebody is somewhere telling you politics isn’t all about money? Lol

My guy ignore jega

A spending limit stipulates the maximum that can be expended. It doesn't makes it mandatory that, that amount must be expended. Far less than that amount can be expended. What should be of concern to us is why do we spend so much in managing and prosecuting elections in Nigeria?
In every election circle,INEC incurred huge expenditure to procured electoral materials including the printing of ballot papers which cost more than the cost of printing the national currency . This is done in a. bid to stop the rigging machinations of our politicians seeking for political offices.
This can be regarded as normal in a clime where the occupation of public/political offices by almost all comers through politics are means of primitive accumulation of wealth. If the rewards inherent in occupying public/political offices are high , the stakes must be inevitably high, too.
This is the major cause behind the huge funds been splashed on elections both by the election management body and those contesting elections.
To address this issue, we must go back to the character of those who are seeking public offices through elections and whose primary desire is to enrich him or herself with the public resources at his or her disposal as much as possible. We must devise a way to put forward only those with sincere interest of serving the people, for electoral contests. For it is only those who are not seeking for the spoils of public offices that can restrain themselves from putting so much money in election and engaged in rigging and sabotaging elections.
