Vice-President Namadi Sambo has said the Federal Government is planning to create a Ministry of Information Technology. Sambo disclosed this on Saturday, on the occasion of the 27th Convocation ceremony of the University of Port Harcourt.

"We are currently working on the creation of a new Ministry of Information Technology to boost technology in the country," he said.


Sambo said there was a need to create the ministry in order to tap the potential of many talented Nigerian youths in information technology.


He said education was one of the priorities of the present administration "hence its commitment to support institutions aimed at providing Nigerians with quality education.


"Nine Federal Universities are currently being constructed across the country to help educate the ever growing population," Sambo said.


He commended the university for brazing the trail in producing "sound minded" graduates and ensuring that the country produced quality leaders for the future.


The vice president donated N3 billion on behalf of the government "for further development of the university".


Earlier, Professor Joseph Ajienka, the Vice-Chancellor of the university, had said the university had setup an institutional capacity enhancement programme aimed at strengthening research and development.


"This programme will harness research efforts of faculties, departments and institutes and apply such research in solving the problems of the larger society," he said.

Will it not be like the ministry they created when mobile phone entered into Nigeria newly and then revamped it 3 more times and I think the ministry died with the advent of GSM. More jobs sha.

There are already two similar ministries in place now. And the painful part is that they would put a computer illiterate as a minister.

While they ought to be reducing the cost of running government, they are increasing it. too bad!

I think its a good one by this administration, a lot of countries have really developed through infotech, so its time its brought to the lime light, we have very good IT professionals, that can really function and be seen through this ministry.

and this our president na PhD holder, can someone tell me how this man is better than Mufu the bricklayer in reasoning and planning?

Nigeria does NOT "invent" or conduct any useful R and D, everything used here will be from China, India, or Germany so I don't see what usefulness this will have unless to create bunch of low-wage jobs for the Nigeria masses. At least, 50 naira is better than joblessness.

I think we require a Ministry of Small Business and Entrepreneurship Development , so that the Small Business Minister can be tasked with Job creation.

It's a way of creating employment. 1 minister, 2 PA's , 1 Driver Many staff don't you see?

Hope they get really qualified people to head the ministry. We could definitely use some development in microelectronics for example.

Darn it!!! I demand they create a Ministry of Looting and Corruption, that way we don't have to keep wondering if they are stealing or not stealing our money. That way it will be in plain sight.
