cool Very stupid excuse for a coup, we know most likely they are targeting Nigeria with all this nonsense ... but they would be surprise what would happen , when Mali was showing a "I don't care attitude", I knew something wasn't right.it is all an economic game , how do you trade among yourself when there is sanction everywhere. Stupid Coupist, brainless idiots with not sense of Patriotism.

Nigeria too is heading in the same direction. The rank and file will one day become frustrated with the incessant killings of junior soldiers on the battle front due to lack of adequate arms and ammunitions, despite trillions of naira in defense budget year in year out. Added to the lack of prompt payment of meagre salaries and allowances that is paid late. Meanwhile the senior officers with political connections are living big.

I pray the Buhari administration sees the danger and quickly address the moral and equipment of our military fast before it degenerates into a crisis.

The great pity is that this very fact was one of the prime grounds on which the GEJ administration was shoved.

If not for corruption within the militaries of West African countries, Boko Haram would not have been able to seed, not to talk of grow. Afterall most West African states had death with Islamic terrorists in the past under military regimes. Civilian governments seem incapacitated due to corruption.

Military Governments, sorry gwaments, were also corrupt. I am not sure this is a "civilian government" thing so much as a simple problem of political will.

Youre still a kid who didn't live during military junta

There was no militancy, IPOB, Boko Haram, Fulani Herdsmen and ISWAP during military regimes. The corruption was less under military regimes.

The worse thing about military regimes was Human Rights violations and abuses, sit tightism and authoritarianism.

Yes there was corruption but the level was much less than under civilian. The corruption was only perpetuated by the military ruler and his cronies. Even the governor's could not steal from the coffers without the knowledge of the head of state.

Under civilian government corruption was free for all. From governors to legislators to even judges. From ministers to service chiefs to civil servants.

Expect a revolt when the leadership is a complete disgrace.

Democracy does not seem to befit African states. Politicians in black Africa see democracy as a vehicle to corner wealth. Go around the countries and you will find religion, nepotism and tribalism playing major roles.

How is it that ISWAP having been crushed in other nations, has seized major cities and communities in West Africa? How do you feel each time you hear that the group controls Lake Chad region, installs governors and collects taxes from them? Politicians corner funds provided to destroy these groups, allowing them to thrive.

How can we have a country that is called “the giant of Africa”, yet the same country is pushed and shoved around by a rag tag group?

That’s what to expect when the leadership of the country cannot rule properly.

Why not address the reasons given for the coup. Are the reasons valid?

Government sources could not immediately be reached on Monday. Frustration has risen in the West African country in recent months due to the frequent killing of civilians and soldiers by the militants, some of whom have links to Islamic State and al Qaeda.

With mutinying soldiers demanding more support for their fight against Islamist militants

The reasons are never valid, a coup never solve a problem like this , the challenge here is people fighting an asymmetric warfare in a symmetric way . There is need to change the modus operandi of the Military to fit into todays reality. Even symmetric warfare has change, the Russian -Ukraine debacle has shown that , with Satellite, you can pick out the entire enemy assets and prepare a game plan.

We need this too

History reminds us that the sanctions on the back of a coup are more punitive to the masses than to the leaders.

Even visas become a problem, I guess we can recall when embassies/high commissions were issuing visas to Nigerians from Ghana.

As an inport dependent nation, inflation would spike much more than what we see today. There are very very few examples where a coup eventually left the masses better. And even if better, typically for a short time.

Even though I don't support a coup, sometimes a coup might be the only option for securing the territorial integrity of a country. It happened in Egypt. When Mohammed Morsi was bringing in religion into politics and allowing Muslim Brotherhood into government, the military leaders led by El Sis overthrew his government.

The military is usually a unifying organization, they won't tolerate a civilian government that would dismember the country or introduce policies that would disunity the country.

Even in the former Soviet Union, the military attempted a coup against Boris Yeltsin from breaking up tje union. It failed because the people supported Yelsin.

What the Burkinabe (and Nigerian) soldiers are complaining about is not even tactics. It's lack of basic equipment to fight the militants or Islamic terrorists. They are ordered to the war front without adequate arms, without enough ammunitions and without adequate supplies. Apart from that no adequate intelligence and then they have to deal with sabotage. It's like a suicide mission. And they cannot resign. Many fine officers have died needlessly.

About 4 countries have had regime change through coup d'etat in the last five years.
Buhari was sensible as much as possible to avoid the mistakes of appointing a particular section of the country at the helm of security sector. The trigger happy fifth columnists would have perpetrated a repeat of January 1966, going by the extreme amount of hate they exhibit against the country on a daily.

Well the problem is that one cant really say because owing to the nature of Military Gwaments, there is a lack of information. The secrecy is far greater and as such you dont even know what slides underneath the rug. The open nature of civilian gwaments may be part of the reason you are able to see, and thus think, that they are more kwarapt. All I can accede to is that there are many more participants in a civilian gwament, not necessarily that the kwarapshin is greater.

Believe me kwarapshin is far greater under civilian government. The total revenue received by the IBB government in 8 years is less than the total revenue received by the Jonathan government in one year. Meanwhile we can point to some projects by IBB. (Remember IBB fought 2 wars). Name one infrastructural project by Jonathan. The total revenue received by Abacha in his 6 odd years is probably only 3 month's revenue by this Buhari government. Remember crude prices fell to $8 under abacha and never rose above $16, all these while under sanctions.

Heavy gunfire was heard yesterday at the Military camps in Ouagadougou and Kaya with the mutineers reportedly listing a set of demands.

Despite the Government's insistence that the mutiny was localised and under control, there seemed to be palpable tension when the internet service was suspended and little or no words were heard from President Kabore, save for his encouraging tweet to the Stallions at the AFCON in Cameroon.

Roch Marc Christian Kaboré was first elected in 2015 and won a second term last year.

The mutineers are expected to make a public statement on television.
