Bayelsa State Governor, Douye Diri, has criticised the recruitment procedure into the Nigeria Police Force, saying it violated the federal character principle.

He spoke at a town hall meeting organised by the state government in collaboration with the Police Service Commission in Yenagoa on Friday.

Faulting the procedure, Diri said recruitment into federal agencies that is based on number of local government areas in a state was unjustifiable and lacked merit.

The governor, in a statement, argued that equitable recruitment can only be achieved if the process was in tandem with the federal character principle as enshrined in Nigeria’s Constitution.

While calling for a review of the anomaly, Diri said no state should be superior to another irrespective of size and population.

He said, “I have one concern and that is on recruitments done in this country based on local governments. As you can see, Bayelsa has only eight local governments. So how do you justify equitable recruitment based on federal character principle as provided in our Constitution when you recruit from 40 local government areas in a state like Kano and here you are recruiting from only eight local government areas?

“There is no justice and equity in that. As representative of the Police Service Commission chairman, please take this back to your commission that the recruitment process in our country is not justifiable, is not fair and there is no equity in it.

“It is only at a forum like this we can tell ourselves the truth. As a federation, every state government, no matter how small, should be considered by virtue of the federal character principle in our Constitution.”

Diri also restated his position on state police, saying that the federal police is now over-burdened by the country’s growing population.

He also called on Nigerians to disabuse their minds from the notion that state police would be hijacked by governors, stressing that the underlying issue is more on the protection of lives and property.

While describing the town hall meeting as very apt and productive, the governor called on participants to see it as the best way forward in the security of the state and the country.

The commissioner representing South-South zone in the Police Service Commission, Austin Braimoh, said the town hall meeting was meant to improve on the relationship between the force and the public.

He stated that the commission was building a new police force for the country and urged qualified youths to take advantage of the recruitment exercise and contribute their quota to nation building.

While responding to concerns raised by the governor, Braimoh noted that though the commission has given each local government area in the country 10 slots each for the recruitment process, the issue of inequality would be addressed in the recommendation to the commission’s hierarchy.

In his remarks, the Bayelsa State Commissioner of Police, Ben Okolo, said the essence of the meeting was to underscore the importance of the police to the citizens and as well encourage the younger generation to be recruited into the force to fight crime.

Federal Character died in 2015 when Nigerians made the greatest mistake of electing an ethnic bigot and a religious fanatic to be President of a diverse nation like Nigeria.

If police recruitment is based on the number of LGAs, it means that those who created false 44 LGAs in Kano and 8 in Bayelsa have a long term plan to enslave others.

It is a big shame that a governor who receives times five of kano state monthly allocation is complaining about per LGA recruitment into the police while ignoring the fact that gross injustice has been done to a state like kano with 44 LGs with 3 senators as Bayelsa with 8 LGs.
Everyone has an area of advantage over others and no one should take that advantage for granted!

Prove bayelsa receives even double what Kano receives ...some of you just wake up and start talking rubbish

Bayelsa generate over 800 billion a year you steal of 600 billion of that and still have mouth to talk

Cost of construction of one road in bayelsa would do 20 roads in Kano ask any civil engineer

Take the good with the bad in this Federal structure we operate. Bayelsa state rightly gets a lot more than states far far bigger in land mass and population because of derivation, no complains. It would have been odd to argue otherwise. If allocations accruing to Bayelsa are judiciously applied, every indigene there will be living at least a Middle Class life. This is a state with about 2 million in population.

allocation is not a direct reward for population or numbers. If indeed Kano has 44 truly merited LGAs, what are the LGAs producing or contributing nationally? You forgot that the extra allocation to Bayelsa comes with a heavy environmental issues and irreversible resource losses. Can we say same for Kano?
