So I normally use the Amuwo Odofin Primary Health Care Centre in Lagos, situated in the Amuwo Odofin Local Government secretariat in Festac, so you can imagine how happy I am when last week, they finally commissioned the new Primary Health Care building named after Senator Oluremi Tinubu. Finally, we can use a proper place instead of that bungalow that is always crowded and stuffy.

You can then imagine my shock when I went there on Tuesday and I saw that the Pharmacy staff, and even the medical laboratory staff that I normally see there were no longer there. I saw new faces in the pharmacy and lab sections.

I asked one of their senior doctors, who is from the same town as me (omo iye mi) and he told me something that I find disturbing.

Did the council chairman build the centre with his private money or it was the LGA money ni? Because the doctor told me that the people who are in the pharmacy and lab now are private companies with relationship with the chairman. He said that they were already working in the council before the building of the new edifice sef, and that the government officials employed to the pharmacy and lab have always been intimidated by these private companies with the backing of the chairman.

He said that even last week, the government officials had packed into the facility gleefully after Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu commissioned the new building with pomp and pageantry, but the chairman sent them back to the bungalow at the back of the building and ordered the private companies into the new building.

I had to ask if the people that were ordered out were not government officials because why will government be paying people to work and another government will be taking that work from them and giving it to someone else. I asked the old doctor to send me to the government pharmacy to buy my drug so I can ask questions stylishly from them but those ones were also using style to dribble me. Seems they are afraid of the chairman and/or the private pharmacy and lab people. I kuku can’t blame them. Security of life is important abeg.

Anyway, my question is simple? Did the Chairman of Amuwo Odofin LGA, Comrade Engr Valentine Buraimoh build the Oluremi Tinubu PHC building with his money ni? Even if he did and he donated it to the LG, must he interfere in how it must be used? Who are these private companies and what relationship do they have with the chairman? Is the chairman saying the employed pharmacists and lab scientists by the state health boards are not competent ni? Is this what is happening across all LGAs in Lagos?

Governor Sanwo-Olu and everyone, please if you know what is happening, let me know o. Because na so corruption dey take start for Nigeria.

Nigerians you know the answer. You just want to spoil the good work of the chairman.
It is a private partnership fee paying. This makes things move faster.
If you want your free pharmacy and lab they are still on the compound.and by the way nothing is free in Lagos.

I know some general hospitals have private pharmacies, some have fee paying pharmacy and there used to be a non fee paying pharmacy for some age group back then.

Maybe it's some sort of public private partnership with a private pharmacy so there can always be endless supply of drugs. They manage their pharmacy them selves, maybe they now pay rent/premium to govt I don't know.

What I don't get is the chasing away of the govt staffs from the new BUILDING that seems wrong. The govt staffs should also offices in the new building.

Not necessarily, I don't think it's all the units in the hospital, it's very common with pharmacies only.

And it's not a new thing if you check well it's written at the entrance of the door to that particular place 'private pharmacy' I used to wonder what it means as I saw it once in the Gen hospital we used, then theres the general ones too govt people are the staff there. ( these ones always have drugs) the queue is always too much and there's also non fee paying pharmacy (these ones hardly have all the drugs)

Just stating my experience from the general hospital I had my babies, we end up buying all our prescription drugs drips and all from outside because of queues as big competent pharmacies are also always around general hospitals and its generally the same pricing so for me it's not a big deal.

Most of the reasons why this happens is always to cut corruption, even billing and payment in these hospitals and everything is computerized now, I am even suspecting itl might be a private coynow handling it.

Just don't understand the chasing some people out part.

U likely didnt get the full story. Apparently, the pharmacy and laboratory sections were privatised.
Unfortunately, that is the best thing to do in Nigerian health sector so that that people will truly work for their pays and recurrent strikes will be prevented.

It is public private partnership. There is similar arrangement in LASUTH. You can choose either of private or public services in those health institution. The reason is this government wants her workers to compete with private workers in term of efficiency , maintenance and revenue.
Tinubu introduced PPP arrangement during his second term. The same reason is Alpha beta collecting revenue instead of Government revenue service.

The govt workers were not terminated. The new facility may be a shadow of itself if handed over to some of those existing govt employees. In most cases, Private sectors do manage things better here in this country. You can't contest that.

All I see is a chairman getting more men on the job, thereby reducing the number of unemployed people in his council.
Kudos to him. kiss
this is a typical Nigerian thinking aloud. Keep doing the wrong thing as long as more men are put on the job

So if the private company can deliver, run and maintain the place like a private hospital then they should go ahead.

Lets not always look things from one side.
so there is nothing the chairman could do to make them do the right thing other than to keep duplicating responsibilities and all we do is to see it as normal

Before the renovation Private Pharmacy store, Lab Diagnostic Centres, Sonography/Ultrasound centres has been there.
It's called Public-Private Partnership Programme(PPP). In 2019, They had a Symposium on the importance/benefits of PPP To Primary Health Care Effective Delivery. This is the outcome of the symposium and it is of great benefit to the Community.

That's why patients can't get treatment at affordable cost. With private hospitals and pharmacies, na over billing

Do you really know the cost implications on the patients and their families? In case you don't know, this is the trend now. Every elected official trying to get stream of income even while out of the office through beneficial arrangement they put in place while in the office, Aregbe did same thing in Osun state.

In Nigeria we strive to condemn everything whether we understand it or not. You can see this writer chose not to write about the cheaper drugs and the very professional manners the private companies attended to him but because jobs were taken from some incompetent nitwit at his local govt he is subtly rubbishing the govt good work.

The private pharmacy happens to be one way the state govt believe beta delivery of services can be reached n the project as been tested in Ikorodu where my cousin gave birth and at Ajah where my wife gave birth n we have nothing but praise for this awesome initiative.

It was on this same site one idiot was complaining about having to pay for healthcare in one of those facilities which I enlightened that their services was way more efficient n affordable to every thing available previously.

I have friends who gave in private hospitals without complications paying over N600K being refered to this hospital while at that facilitate childbirth with surgery it's barely over 100K at most but clones who can impregnate want free healthcare without paying any taxes in a corrupt ridden Nigeria of today.

That's is the way to go if we want institutions with professional conducts. Lagos state has been doing this in all sectors of their economy and thats the reason many policies tends to last long because man know man doesn't work in most of them. A private company handles it and pay dividend to the government. Once the private company fails to live up to expectation, another is given the opportunity. That's how Lastma is being run, same with Brt, and some other Lagos state agencies.
