Borno State Governor, Prof Babagana Zulum, on Thursday, described as “very scary” some findings submitted to him by a committee he constituted and tasked with conducting basic literacy and numeracy competency assessment of 17,229 local education authority teachers across the 27 local government areas of the state.

The state Commissioner for Education, Lawan Wakilbe, presented the committee’s report to Zulum at the Government House in Maiduguri.

The committee had engaged academics in the state before and during assessment tests conducted in January 2022, across the local governments.

The report revealed that out of 17,229 teachers across the 27 LGAs, only 5,439, representing 31.6% proved competent to teach, while 3, 815 teachers, representing 22.1% are not competent to teach and are not trainable.

The report however revealed that 7,975 teachers, representing 46.3% were found not fully competent but trainable.

The report also revealed that 2, 389 teachers, representing 13.9% have been teaching without any formal qualification from any institution.

A breakdown of the report’s findings across the 27 local government areas showed, from the worst indices, that out of 224 teachers in Abadam Local Government Area in northern Borno, only 14 are competent to teach, as 74 are not trainable while 136 can be trained.

The report further said out of Kala-Balge’s 272 teachers, only 21 are competent to teach with 118 not trainable and 133 trainable.

The report also showed indices for other local government areas from which Maiduguri Metropolitan Council has the highest number of 396 teachers not trainable, followed by Askira-Uba with 281, not trainable teachers, Chibok-268, not trainable teachers, Bama-246 not trainable teachers and Biu also with 219 teachers who cannot teach.

This is why there should be civil service exams before hiring. There's no need to pretend this is shocking information when most of you refuse to send your kids to public school. The government would get similar results if they conducted this test on the rest of civil servants.

How do we remedy this, not just in Borno, but other states with such problems..... this needs urgency because you cannot give what you don't have. Its equivalent to passing down dumbness to generations.

I think northerners should be trained in nomadic education because their religion forbids Western education. However, those who graduate from nomadic schools should be given herds of cattle to rear, not end up in offices in Abuja.

I have always said it except you haven't been to the north

Without southerners ...the northern education and health sector would collapse completely

Without NYSC most core northern students won't experience teaching of graduates

It's no big deal to be backward ...Igbos have been their ...1900s Igbos were arguably the least educated ..infact in the 1800s most colonial Clarks were Fulanis/ hausas and yorubas ...but in 60 years Igbos through hard work , committee development bridged the gap ....
The north is not only backward but have refused to grow or improve ....I was shocked when tambuwal laid foundation for the first secondary school Inna local government ...that's sad very very very sad and shows how unserious northerners are towards growth and development
In Igbo land ...most schools are community school ...Igbo villages knew the importance of education built schools primary and secondary , plus the ones church built then plus government efforts that was how the East bridged the gap

North is not serious about development and we Igbos can't wait for them for ever so we want Biafra

Quota system has finished this country. It was quota system that brought tailor-drug kayri to the police force in the first place.

The picture below says it all.

that's what you get when quota system is more important to a nation than qualification

the problem is entire Northern Nigeria, they proliferate the entire federal workforce with mediocrity

Same ratio applies to all federal parastatals and the same reason why this country will never work. Incompetency everywhere you go.
