Thomas Tuchel has slammed the Chelsea fans who chanted Roman Abramovich’s name during a minute’s applause for war-torn Ukraine before Saturday’s 4-0 win against Burnley.

Following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Premier League clubs held a pre-match moment of solidarity with the country before every game this weekend and the majority of fans joined the applause at Turf Moor.

However, a section of the travelling Chelsea support interrupted the applause to sing the name of the club’s Russian owner.

Abramovich this week announced he will sell the Champions League holders amid speculation he could be sanctioned by the British government for his alleged links to Russian President Vladimir Putin.

However, Chelsea boss Tuchel was disappointed with the fans who chose not to respect the show of support for Ukraine.

“It’s not the moment to do this. If we show solidarity we show solidarity and we should do it together,” he said.

“We take the knee together. If an important person from our club or another club unfortunately dies we have a minute of respect.

“It is not the moment to give other messages. It’s the moment to show respect. We want to do this. As a club we need our fans to commit to this minute of applause.

“We do it for Ukraine and there is no second opinion about this situation. They have our thoughts and our support and we should stand together. It’s not the moment for other messages.”

Chelsea have won 19 major trophies in Abramovich’s 19-year reign, including five Premier League titles, two Champions League and the Club World Cup.

Abramovich is reportedly seeking £3 billion ($4 billion) to off-load Chelsea, with Turkish billionaire Muhsin Bayrak the latest wealthy investor to declare his interest in a potential deal.

Swiss tycoon Hansjorg Wyss and American businessman Todd Boehly, a co-owner of the Los Angeles Dodgers baseball team, have reportedly formed a partnership with a view to making a bid.

I am not a Chelsea fan neither am I a lover of Ukraine however I can say from his actions so far Abramowicz is a good man, he has done his bets allow him to relax there's nothing more he can do.

He has given up ownership of the club, he has openly condemned the war, he has volunteered to donate money to Ukrainian victims of the war, he has allegedly spoken to Putin, what more do you guys want from him?

Before the Bossman Era there were restrictions on the number of foreign players that a club could sign and field. The first revolution in Chelsea occurred at the beginning of the Bossman Era. That was when Chelsea began signing flashy foreign players and at a point they had so many foreign stars that they were nicknamed "The United Nations". Many Nigerians began supporting Chelsea at that time.

It all began when Glen Hoddle was manager of Chelsea (1993-1996). He signed Dutch superstar Ruud Gullit and other stars. Hoddle was made England manager after Euro '96 and Gullit became Chelsea coach. From then onward, in the mid and late 1990s up to the early 2000s, Chelsea signed a huge number of stars and they included:

Celestine Babayaro of Nigeria, Gianluca Vialli of Italy (he later became manager of the club), Gianfranco Zola (part of the Little and Large partnership), Ed de Goey (former Dutch number 1 keeper), Dennis Wise (of England), Pierre Luigi Casiraghi (unfortunately, this Italian superstar suffered long term injury after joining the club and he never played again), Gustavo Poyet of Uruguay, Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink of Holland, French legend Marcel Desailly and so on and so forth.


Chelsea were one of the big three clubs in England at that time. The big three were Manchester United, Arsenal and Chelsea. They were usually in the top three in the league and they won the FA Cup a few times. They were regular campaigners in Europe.

In fact, I remember a crazy tie between Barcelona and Chelsea in the late 1990s. It was the Champions League quarter final or semi final. Chelsea beat Barcelona 3-1 in London and then Barcelona won 5-1 after extra time in Spain.

I can't remember if it was in that tie that Babayaro took one for the team. A striker was bearing down the Chelsea goal. Babayaro came from nowhere, hacked the player down, got up and immediately started walking off the field. He didn't even wait for the referee to show him the red card!


I know quite a lot of people that supported Chelsea during this era. That was the Ken Bates era.
