Five governors of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) led the coup against Governor Mai Mala Buni as the acting national chairman of the ruling party, Daily Independent exclusively gathered.

While giving a vivid account of what transpired, a member of the Caretaker Extraordinary Convention Planning Committee (CECPC) from the Northern part of the country on Wednesday, said the five APC governors took advantage of the fact that Buni was receiving medical attention abroad to hatch his removal.

He gave the names of the five governors as Governor Abubakar Sani Bello of Niger, who has since stepped into Buni’s position.

Others, according to him, are Governor Kayode Fayemi of Ekiti; Nasir El-Rufai of Kaduna; Muhammadu Badaru of Jigawa and Atiku Bagudu of Kebbi State.

While insisting that the coup against Buni has to do with the tussle for power in 2023, he added that President Muhammadu Buhari never approved of his removal but rather, the governors acted on their own.

“What happened was simply a coup against Buni led by five governors. What surprised us was the role played by the governor of Niger State who has since taken over Buni’s role while he is receiving treatment abroad.

Was Governor Sani Bello not a member of the CECPC? Was he not part of all the decisions we have been taking all along? “The truth is that Governor Abubakar Sani Bello, Fayemi, El-Rufai, Badaru Atiku Bagudu planned the coup against Buni.

These were the same people going about with the national chairman and severally passed votes of confidence in him. Why are they stabbing him in the back now when he is on the sickbed receiving medical attention abroad? “From what we have seen so far, they did what they did all because of 2023 presidency”.

Even though he said the anti- Buni governors informed the president of their actions, our source said Buhari never gave his consent.

“APC has hundreds of court cases in many of the states. These issues are what Buni is trying to resolve before the convention so that the outcome will not be nullified.

But these people went and lied against him before the president that he doesn’t want to conduct the convention.

“Buni is a patriotic fellow. He respects the president a lot. All what they said that the president approved his removal as APC chairman is false. Did they show any letter to that effect? They are just dropping the name of the president for selfish gains".

A NEC meeting was called in Aso Villa when Buni was appointed. If the president feels dissatisfied and wants him removed, the same process will be adopted”.

Also on Wednesday, Governor Abubakar Sani Bello, the acting chairman of APC, inaugurated chairmen and secretaries of subcommittees for the March 26 national convention.

The chairman, who said the March 26 convention date is sacrosanct, explained the new panels are being reduced to a manageable size for effective delivery.

Addressing newsmen on Wednesday at the end of their meeting at the APC national secretariat in Abuja, the governor also announced that the number of some subcommittees for the convention had been trimmed. In the new list, the names of Governor Buni and John Akpanudoedehe were conspicuously missing from the Central Planning Committee of the convention.

In the list released on Wednesday, Governor Sani Bello, who has been presiding over the affairs of the party since Buni’s absence, is the chairman of the Central Planning Committee. Other members are Ken Nnamani, Yusuf Abubakar Yusuf, Akinyemi Jagaba, Prof. Tahir Mamman, David Lyon, Sen. Abba Alli, Stella Okotete, James Lalu and Ismaeel Ahmed.

There are procedures of how a chairman can be removed and if it's not done that way then whatever you are doing becomes a nullity and you risk not presenting candidates in the next election

Lol... Bello has reconvened for NEC meeting and Buni will be legally shown the way out during the NEC meeting. The coup was finalized by Bello, having utilized the power handed to him by Buni before leaving for his medical leave. So chill, Buni is already a goner.

If this report is correct, the arranged coup is not in favour of Amaechi or Tinubu because Fayemi and El-Rufai seems to be in the same presidential race too. So what happened earlier this week is their's to benefit from. In days to come things will become more clearer.
