Nwafor Orizu was the third senate president After Nnamdi Azikiwe (quit senate presidency to be the ceremonial president in November 1960) and Dennis Osadebay (quit to be premier of Mid Western region). He played a central role in helping Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe become premier of the Eastern Region, using his influence in the NCNC. Zik appointed Orizu the minister of local Government.

He was a member of the Nnewi Royal family. His nephew Igwe Kenneth Onyeneke Orizu III is the current Igwe (King) of Nnewi Kingdom. Nwafor Orizu College of Education in Nsugbe, Anambra State, is named after him.

The memorial thanksgiving service is expected to attract the presence of top Igbo sons from within and outside the country, diplomats, the academia, business class and top rated entertainers.

The President of Nigeria, Nnamdi Azikiwe left the country in late 1965 first for Europe, then on a cruise to the Caribbean. Under the law, Orizu became Acting President during his absence and had all the powers of the President.

A coup was launched on 16 January 1966 by a group of disaffected young military officers led by Major Chukwuma Kaduna Nzeogwu. The army quickly suppressed the revolt but assumed power when it was evident that key politicians had been eliminated, including Prime Minister Abubakar Tafawa Balewa, Premier of Northern Region Sir Ahmadu Bello and Premier of the Western Region, Chief Samuel Ladoke Akintola. Orizu made a nationwide broadcast, after he had briefed Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe on the phone on the decision of the cabinet, announcing the cabinet's "voluntary" decision to transfer power to the armed forces. Major General Johnson Aguiyi-Ironsi then made his own broadcast, accepting the "invitation". On 17 January, Major General Ironsi established the Supreme Military Council in Lagos and effectively suspended the constitution.

This should be a matter of public record. Dr. Nwafor Orizu should therefore be counted among the Heads of State of Nigeria, and accorded his due place in the National Hall of Fame. The mere fact of taking the oath of the office of President, even in the acting role, places Nwafor Orizu legally as President and Head of State of the Federal Republic, and in that wise, of a higher status and capacity over Ernest Shonekan, who served as Head of the interim Government for three months, and who has been accorded all the rights due a former Head of state of Nigeria.

I just thought that the last two photos were not relevant. I think they messed up the thanksgiving notification. Why the need to show two different photos of the announcer? I thought he was related to hushpuppi with those bling bling and hat and why tell us he was the last child??

Most of Nigeria history was written by Yoruba's and Igbo's.

Orizu almost swore in Mbadiwe as acting Prime Minister he had to be stopped by the Cabinet !!


Before Orizu refused to swear in Dipcherima , Orizu had been ready and wanted to handover Power to Mbadiwe

The Cabinet had to stop Orizu from swearing in Mbadiwe on the Attorney Generals advice

Which led to them Nominating Dipcherima

The same Orizu that was ready to swear in Mbadiwe till he was stopped now claimed he needed to contact Zik before swearing in Dipcherima

This was before Gen Ironsi took Power

Ironsi took Power 2 days later. , after the Prime Minister went missing using the confusion deliberately created by Orizu’srefusal to Swear in Dipcherima from Borno as an excuse

The Cabinet nominated Dipcherima as Acting Prime Minister in order to request help from the UK in finding Prime Minister Balewa
