The House of Representatives Member Representing Obubra/Etung Federal Constituency has come under fire over the alleged embezzlement of over 500million Naira COVID-19 Relief Fund meant for his Constituents as part of Federal Government Intervention to cushion the effect of COVID-19 between 2020 to 2021.

The fund received, formed part of the disbursement carried out by the Coalition Against COVID-19 (CACOVID) and the Federal Government COVID-19 Taskforce headed by the SGF Boss Mustapha and through the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development. According to budgIT, a civic Organization dedicated to social accountability and transparency, the Federal Government via a 2020 Appropriation (Amendment) Act, under various headings, provided COVID-19 funding and assistance. For context, 500billion Naira was set aside from the total amount of 2.3 trillion Naira budgeted by the Federal Government through its Economic Sustainability Plan (ESP).

The Member of Parliament was said to have received the relief funds in lieu of Palliatives for his Constituents but failed to utilize same for his Constituents. As the 2023 election draws near, reports available to us, suggests that the member of Parliament has started bribing Leaders of his Party to secure his 3rd ambition. Available report reveal that the member of Parliament gave the sum of #10million Naira to selected leaders in Etung Local Government Area, while another 10million Naira was given to Hon. Alex Irek and Ernest Irek.

The selected Etung Leaders that received the money are said to be making moves to reconcile Mike Etaba with Senator John Owan-Enoh, to pave way for him to clinch the APC ticket.

Meanwhile, the House of Reps member has also been accused of embezzling money meant for people living with disabilities, which prompted One Dr. Job Agbor, one of the persons living with disabilities from Etung Local Government Area to petition him to the ICPC. Currently, there's an ongoing investigation by ICPC to unravel more facts about the petition.

The attention of the Member of Parliament representing the good people of Etung/Obubra in Green Chamber of the National Assembly, Rt. Hon. Mike Etaba has been drawn to an ignominious piece making the rounds on social media and authored by one Bassey Duke.

Although the Rt. Honourable is not oblivious of this period of political activities where propaganda and political racketeering have become the stock-in-trade of some shady characters in the society, it is worthy to note that the name Bassey Duke, whether real or a pseudonym, is a perpetrator of such brazen political wrangling.

Like disjointed appendages, the author of the incongruous piece had allegedly accused the MP of embezzling 500 million Naira Covid-19 Relief Funds meant for his constituents and 10 million bribes to some select leaders in Etung Local Government Area, as well as another 10 million bribe to Hon. Alex Irek and Ernest Irek.

Nonetheless, since the author was never bothered to support his piece with evidential facts, we will also, in our response, stay on generalities.

Let me bother a bit to ask the sponsor of this inenarrable piece some few questions.
Can you please provide us with the links and account details of the transactions? Could you list the Ministries/Agencies/Commissions that paid the funds? I am sure these questions will automatically drive these miscreants into a recluse.

Is the writer and his sponsors too mentally lethargic to know what public finance administration entails? When did the act of lawmaking turn legislators into contractors? When has oversight functions become superintendency? These people ought to go back and learn the basics of governance and its architecture please.

In saner climes, one who is privy to such information writes to alert anti-graft agencies, requesting that the accused is quizzed on the allegations against him/her. But rather than do so, Bassey Duke and his cohorts took to social media to concoct lies in their bid to spite a man who is heating the crucibles and delivering dividends of democracy to his people.

It is bewildering to think how someone who is inconsistent with the governance framework of the country could delve into matters beyond his reach, to the extent of peddling such morally despicable untruths against a man of impeccable political track records. But nothing is more vile than the writer’s political and intellectual dishonesty.

While we hope that these mudslingers and cronies meet their Waterloo sooner than later, we implore the general public disregard mudslingings and other hateful messages with political underpinnings in an ill-begotten attempt to question the integrity and political pedigree of the people’s representative — Rt. Hon. Mike Etaba.
