Okorocha disburses N2.7bn for free education in Imo

By Emma Mgbeahurike, Oweri.

The Governor of Imo State, Rochas Okorocha, has started the actualisation of his free education project in the state.

To this effect, he has made available the sum of N2.7 billion for the renovation of primary and secondary schools in the 27 local government areas of the state.
In his address to reporters in Owerri yesterday as part of the activites marking the maiden Executive Council meeting of the administration, the state Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Barr. Soronnadi Njoku, said out of the amount, a total sum of N100 million was allocated to each of the 27 local government areas as take-off grants of the state Rescue Mission on Health, Security and Education.

He said the state government would improve on the hospitals and bring them to a higher standard in the three zones of the state.

The Executive Council spokesman noted that commissioners, permanent secretaries and House of Assembly members in every local government area would oversee the refurbishment of the schools.

He disclosed that each of the benefiting schools would constitute a minimum of 300 pupils or students in primary or secondary schools in the rural areas and 500 pupils or students in the urban centres.

According to the Attorney General, "Council has carefully looked into Governor Owelle Okorocha’s first broadcast to the people of the state recently and has ratified all the statements as policies of government."

Njoku said the Exco had adopted the governor’s positions on the suspension of 10,000 jobs, the established of a new Department of Justice and Fairness, dissolution of IRROMA, establishment of Health at Your Door-Steps outreach, the changing of the state university’s name to its original name, dissolution of Imo councils and the slashing of the security votes of certain political office holders to N2.5 billion.

He also said the Exco had approved the establishment of Imo Rescue Security, an outfit comprising the Police, Army and Nigeria Security Services and Civil Defense Corps.

A good step in the right direction cheesy. Let's hope the billions won't be diverted. Trying to sound optimistic but I ain't finding it easy because Naija happens to a country where we hear news of disbursement of large sums of money without feeling the impact. Then we all delve into EFCC abracadabra again angry.
Re: Okorocha Disburses N2.7bn For Free Education In Imo by Sunofgod(m): 5:20pm On Jul 02, 2011
Hope this doesn't lead to a new phenomena called 'Ghost Pupils'. (But it probably will)

What if schools decide to 'swell' there numbers?

I hope there are ways of verifying how many pupils are actually in attendance.

Also, 2.7 billion is a finite amount - How much is needed to pay the actual fee's?

Okorocha for president 2015 or Chime for  president 2015. Who says the Igbo's don't have presidential materials in the waiting. The onus is for us as Igbo's to start the campaign for okorocha or chime as the next President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. Only reason not to is if GEJ wants a second term.

My money would be on Chime becos, he is PDP, whilst APGA needs Okorocha to perform to gain the south east and south south.

Expensive/Unaffordable Education = Quality Education ??, 70% of Nigerians live on less than $1 per day, so who will then attend your so called state of the arts schools, I guess the children of same crooks who are milking the rest of us plus foreigners who can afford the fees.

Yes free education = quality education if well executed. Take a cue from Scandinavia countries, Sweden in particular. They've got a very good standard of education yet none of their locals pay from their 1st day at school till when they graduate from University.

I am convinced you are just trying to TWIST logic to score some brownie point for a policy you probably have little understanding for. Since when did FREE EQUAL Quality? Nigerians ehn!!! And you have access  to tons of free dictionaries online to help you if you have problems with word comprehension. I mean come ON!

The man is giving money for "FREE" education, and some of you here are now quick to claim it is auto-magically quality, when we know that Education is a rotten state nationwide, and has been for the better part of the last 3 decades.

Learn not to comment on things you are ignorant of. Free DOES NOT make education of better Quality. It simply makes what is available QUALITY. If the man announced that he was really interested in improving quality, let him say so. No need for you to try to connect the disjointed so you can post another flimsy line on nairaland for the man -- even if you expect to be paid to do so.

Re: Okorocha Disburses N2.7bn For Free Education In Imo by rolchi(m): 12:49pm On Jul 04, 2011
if you read the story well

a total sum of N100 million was allocated to each of the 27 local government areas as take-off grants of the state Rescue Mission on Health, Security and Education.

One will find that the 2.7Billion is not going to Education alone. It is going for Health, Education & Security. FRom my simple arithmetic, that means that education will get 34million per LG! Do NL feel that this is enough to renovate our secondary schools in Imo, just think!

Propaganda!

We are still awaiting the outcome of Gov Okorocha's 'Review of the 10,000 jobs'. Those guys need to be put back to the income tab to reduce crime.
Good moves so far my Governor.

stop all this ur baseless logical arguements. . .how many states in nigeria offer quality education and at what cost. . .There r 2 things involved
1.free and substandard education
2.expensive and substandard education(what we have in many states 2day). . .

@Rolchi

I urge u to read the article well.
The amount of 100million, is a take off grant. Its is not the totality of amount to be spent on schools or health.
More funding would be disbursed.
Its not a propaganda
