Africa has a diverse cultural landscape. Many of them are well-known to the general public. But in this article, I'll show you some traditions from seven ethnic groups that will astonish you.

1. Fulani - Beating to Earn a Wife
Before getting married, the Fulani tribes do Sharo. The groom is flogged by the community's elders in order to gain a wife and respect. The wedding is called off if the groom is not strong enough to bear the hurt.
Aside from flogging, the bride's family can choose from Koowgal, a dowry payment alternative, or Kabbal, an Islamic ceremony similar to marriage but without the bride and groom.

2. Stealing wives from each other - Niger
Men are known to steal each other's wives in the Wodaabe tribe of Niger, West Africa. The Wodaabe's first marriage is set up by their parents when they are young, and it must be between relatives from the same family. Wodaabe males, on the other hand, dress up in extravagant makeup and costumes and dance to dazzle the women — and possibly steal a new wife – at the annual Gerewol Festival.
A guy becomes socially recognized if he is able to flee undetected (particularly from an existing husband who may not wish to separate with his wife).
