Civil rights advocacy group, Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria, on Sunday, said it is disturbing that under the watch of the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), the national power grid is collapsing intermittently even after humongous investments.

HURIWA, in a statement by its National Coordinator, Emmanuel Onwubiko, lamented that despite trillions of dollars thought to have been borrowed by the Buhari regime to improve the megawatts produced by about 19 power generating plants in the country, the national grid keeps wobbling, with perpetual outages that throw businesses, homes and the entire country into subterranean darkness.

The group, therefore, demanded a comprehensive forensic financial audit of the power sector since Buhari came on board and call for all the top figures that have served under this government since 2015 for them to render accounts.

HURIWA’s call followed the collapse of the national electricity grid on Friday, making it the third time the grid had collapsed within the space of one month, and about the fifth in 2022.

Many Nigerian cities and economic powerhouses including Abuja, Lagos, Jos, Kaduna, were thrown into darkness Friday after the national grid collapsed again.

In January 2020, Kaduna State Governor, Nasir el-Rufai, after a National Economic Council meeting in Abuja, said the Buhari regime has supported Nigeria’s “broken” electricity sector with N1.7 trillion since 2017.

In September 2021, Buhari said that Nigeria needed over $400bn to fund its critical energy needs, according to a statement quoted by Bloomberg.

Earlier in June, the World Bank said the Buhari government has borrowed a total of N1.3tn since 2017 to ensure that generation companies continue generating electricity, adding that it would cost the Federal Government an additional N3.08tn through 2023, if current performance levels and low tariffs persist.

HURIWA said many more debts have been incurred by the Buhari regime under the pretext of attempting to stabilise the power sector but yet Nigeria barely generates and distributes 5,000 megawatts daily, while businesses and homes grapple with increasing electricity tariffs, fuel scarcity and its attendant hike in prices.

HURIWA’s Onwubiko said, “It is worrisome that despite the huge spendings on the power sector, the situation under Buhari hasn’t improved an inch. Asides from the external borrowings, over one trillion has entered the electricity sector through budgetary provisions. Yet, whilst the politicians feed fat on this humongous cash, the national grid keeps intermittently collapsing and nobody is held to account.

“HURIWA demands a comprehensive forensic financial audit of the power sector since President Muhammadu Buhari came on board and calls for the arrest of all the top figures that have served in the sector including ministers if they so failed to render accounts. Nigerians cannot continue living in perpetual darkness and paying dearly for it through high tariffs. Enough is enough.”

They say when the head is off it will be too late to cry again.
The so called civil rights advocacy GROUP __ HURIWA are now trying to cry when their heads are off.
Power supply system collapses in Nigeria has being in existence before the existence of private properties.
Back to history ! ,Nigeria has been experiencing power system failures since after The country's Independent in 1960 : you can ask how and why.
Recall before Independence, back in 1955 the British Colonial rule aside from Thermal coal power Stations The British Colonial rule started the construction of KAINJI HYDRO POWER SUPPLY STATION in KAINJI from the River Niger with water lake of ( 7miles by 3 miles) . The proposed HYDRO STATION was to be 12 units at 100 Mw. per unit which was to be 1200 Mw., when completed, but the construction was supposed to still be ongoing after Independent but not much attention was given by the then Independent government in power to the extent that in the Yakubu Gowon Military administration 1969 says he was doing his clompleted KAINJI HYDRO Station commissioning with just 4 Units @ 80 Mw per unit totaling 320 Mw instead 1200Mw. Remember Gowon statement " MONEY IS NOT OUR PROBLEM BUT HOW TO SPEND IT"
Unfortunate by 1975 one of the 4 units has collapsed bringing the HYDRO STATION back to 240 Mw. See Kainji Hydro report.
Back to the history of Nigeria power supply systems reports; Remember "THE 11 JAILED NEPA MEN " during Babangida military administration. See all the Nigerian Newspapers reports then.
Why, recalled; during his administration when he said government Authority will not spend money on NEPA again and brought NE PA in to the same category C as NTA and Radio Nigeria because as he said NEPA is making money through its Power supply transmission in line with NTA and Radio Nigeria who were also making money through TV and Radio broadcasting private advertisement and that the government establishments for government money supply buildings are NPA Nigeria Ports Authority and NNPC. Remember the era of "-FORM M" and that was what brought NEPA going into strike which brought about him BABANGIDA charging 11 NEPA UNION members for Treason and they were eventually sentenced to 10 year jail each.
Also during Abacha regime , after releasing the JAILED NEPA MEN the JAILED NEPA MEN still went to Abacha at ASO ROCK to tell him the need for government to continue to build the country's power systems but Abacha replied them " at Aso Rock saying, pointing onto a light on the ceiling "" NO BE LIGHT BE THIS YOU ARE ALL THIEVES , Go give them ( N200Million) forgotten there are no power supply shedding systems is ever carried out in Abuja in those days.
See Newspapers publications then.
Then came Obasanjo Regime $16 billion dollars gas power Stations programmes how many can we see today.‽ your answers are as good as mine.
Then came Jonathan's regime end of NEPA given power supply systems, Generation ,Transmission and Distributions to Political Private enterprisers rather than "" Well Established Foreign Private Power Generation, Transmission and Distribution Enterprises.
A Country of over 200 Million people with just a little above 2000 Mw. supply from the system , according to a recent power supply system official at a meeting in Ogun State capital Abeokuta said the highest ever power supply in the country was just a little above 5000 Mw. In 1980. Just imagine.
See South Africa a country of about 67 Million people is pretty on above 49000 Mw and is still planning for another 70000Mw very soon. and India 2nd largest country in the world well over a billion population is having well over 100gigawatts ( Well over 100Gw.) See google.com.)
Solutions to to no power supply situations in the country
1 The Federal and all State governments should get involved in power supply systems all over the country.
2 Well Established Foreign power supply systems builders (Power generation,
Transmission and Distribution systems) should be involved in in collaboration with the Federal and States government.
3 And all operations should P P P ie Public_ Private _ Partnership
4 The System should be like NEPA systems, what you Generate, should be what you Transmit and what you Transmit should be what you Distribute so there must be Universal Operation System.
So Enough is Enough says UKPABI ASIKA.
