Rattled by Russia's invasion of Ukraine, Finland's prime minister said Wednesday the Nordic nation would decide whether to apply for NATO membership "within weeks", despite the risk of infuriating Moscow.

Helsinki's parliament will next week open a debate about joining the Western alliance after the Ukraine war sparked a dramatic U- turn in public and political opinion in Finland and neighbouring Sweden over long-held policies of military non-alignment.


Attempting to join NATO would almost certainly be seen as a provocation by Moscow, for whom NATO's expansion on its borders has been a prime security grievance.

But Prime Minister Sanna Marin said Finland would now decide quickly on whether to apply for membership of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. "I think it will happen quite fast.

Within weeks, not within months," Marin told a Stockholm press conference with Swedish Prime Minister Magdalena Andersson.


Sweden is also discussing NATO membership following Russia's February 24 invasion.

Guarantees - A Finnish government- commissioned report released Wednesday examined the "fundamentally changed" security environment, according to the foreign ministry, and will make its way through parliament.

The report did not make recommendations but stressed, as did Marin in her speech, that without NATO membership Finland enjoys no security guarantees, despite being a partner to the alliance.

"There is no other way to have security guarantees than under NATO's deterrence and common defence as guaranteed by NATO's Article 5," Marin said, referring to an attack on one member being considered an attack on all.

The "deterrent effect" on Finland's defence would also be "considerably greater" inside the alliance, the report noted while adding it also carried obligations for Finland to assist other members. An opening parliamentary debate on membership is set for next Wednesday.

To add to it: The Swedish Prime Minister clarified earlier reports on the country's accession to NATO, noting that a decision has not yet been made. It is necessary to thoughtfully analyze the situation and the consequences.

The Finnish government has submitted to the parliament a detailed report on what challenges the country will face in the event of possible accession to NATO, the Finnish public broadcaster YLE reports.

According to the TV and radio company, along with the advantages that Finland will be able to get from joining NATO, the report also considers possible risks, in particular, related to the reaction of neighbors, including Russia, to this.

Some of U will jus be ranring online. How many Nations can Russia attack at once? Do U know Lithuania, Latvia and Poland all share boundaries with Russia and all joined NATO long ago. Why isn't Russia threatening them?

To some degrees, Russia is being careful of its own interests and security. But the security is such a way of ideological insecurity of a future attack. Anyone who is learned enough in History and International Relations knows well what is going on. These wars are embedded in values and ideologies/worldview of world wars and post world wars occurrences and relations

Logically, war against Russia is not going to be an easy one considering the size of the country and weather. Russia is a big country and cold, so you would have to encircle the country and have troops well adapted to the cold to attack it. These lapses are well known to war strategists as these had been seen in the Napoleonic France Invasion of Russia. So the expansion of NATO is tending towards encircling the country. If you look at these countries who are NATO members, their border lengths with Russia don't really matter in attacking it, they're small and is only a crazy war doomed to fail that would use those as grounds to attack a country of that size. This is also why taking Ukraine too is not going to be an easy work. A country of that size still dissected into two by the Dnieper River.

This is why Ukraine NATO's membership matters to Russia. All these Nodic countries' memberships really matter. You're encircling the country gradually and more or less with troops who are used to the terrains of the Arctic.

But generally, Russia's behaviour towards 'the humanity' in Ukraine is just too bad and non conservative. Wars have rules and laws.

I just hope Russia is not tendering towards SEPSIS like some of our white blood cells trying to wade off infections (foreign bodies)

Begging Una ,the rest of Europe are simply supporting them and fighting a proxy war against Russia .There is nothing bad in begging in this kinda situation cause ukraine don’t really have a standard military yet they are still standing there ground.
