Legal icon and elder statesman, Chief Afe Babalola, says an interim government should replace the current administration at the expiration of President Muhammadu Buhari tenure in 2023.

Babalola told a news conference in Ado-Ekiti on Monday that the interim government should be in office for six months to chart a new course for Nigeria.

He stressed that the 2023 elections should be suspended until Nigeria has “a new-look peoples’ Constitution which should provide for part-time legislators and non-executive president’’.

Babalola said that members of the interim government should be drawn from all living former presidents and vice-presidents; some selected ministers and governors and delegates of prominent professional associations.

The professional associations could be the Nigeria Medical Association, Nigeria Bar Association, Nigeria Labour Congress, Nigeria Union of Journalists, Academic Staff Union of Universities and Civil Society Organisations.

The elder statesman noted that such delegates should be elected on zero party bases.

He said it was regrettable that the current 1999 Constitution, foisted on Nigerians by the military was no longer in tune with realities of the day.

“The same Constitution has made politics become not only very attractive, but the only lucrative business in Nigeria today.

“What this means is that any election that holds under the present scenario will end up producing transactional and recycled leaders, with no ability to turn things around,’’ he said.

The university proprietor advised that the new Constitution which should be coordinated by the interim government, should spell out rules and regulations on improved qualifications of those contesting elections.

He added that the new Constitution should provide for part-time legislators and not full-time legislators, considering the attendant waste of resources.

“The new Constitution should also provide that there shall be no salary, but sitting allowances only for lawmakers.

“It should provide a true federal system of government, instead of the expensive presidential system of government. I suggest parliamentary system of government, with a unicameral legislature.

“The new Constitution should also provide a body at the local, state and federal levels to screen all aspirants on the sources of their wealth and means of livelihood, criminal record which includes pending suits,’’ he said.

The legal luminary added that any person that would become the president of Nigeria should not be older than 60 years of age and must have a varsity degree.

I like the man suggestion, but for such a thing to happen, it needs to be back by the law.

Our lawmakers can still work on the kind of people's constitution he is talking about though

If we decide to throw away this constitution and work on a new constitution, 6 months won't even be enough. I doubt we won't all go our different ways sef cause we will never agree on the new constitution.

What Afe Babalola is suggesting is not known to law. The election will go ahead as planned.

It was stated in constitution that election can be shifted if there is insecurity.

I’m talking about his suggestion that an interim government made up of former presidents, Vice Presidents, governors and professional bodies should take over the administration of the country for six months. Where in the constitution did he get that from?

shocked

Everything will go as planned. No need for shifting. We had far more concern in 2015/2019.

I hereby volunteer to head the interim government as the exalted Maximum Leader and Area Fada of Nigeria bestowed with unlimited powers to do and undo at both federal and state levels of authority. The first order of the day will be to legalize marijuana for medical and recreational consumption, with taxes imposed on commercial farms and exporters so as to open up gigantic revenue streams for government and investors alike.

The second directive I will issue will be to formalize a revenue-sharing formula based on the income generated by each state, whereby those in the Niger Delta will enjoy budgetary allocations commensurate with the proceeds of Nigeria's oil export income on the international market, while states of Northern Nigerianistan will be encouraged to enjoy the bountiful returns derived from the export of groundnuts, soya beans, millet, and camel meat.

Standing by for my call to serve in the new federal capital of Warri, conveniently relocated for close proximity to Nigeria's primary source of income, those all-important oil fields. Abuja can of course be retained as a tourist attraction where visitors from all over the world can go to ride donkeys, hunt terrorist gangs for sport, and eat suya made with meat from questionable sources.

A stupid old and senile Afonja talking trash.

That was how the pee poo drug lord insisted PVCs have expired.

Seems they get stupider with age…

Who is gonna be in charge of the interim govt? Military or civilian?

Secondly, how sure is he that the interim govt will fix the problems that Buhari and Osinbajo have created in the past 7 years?

This is simply madness

It’s unconstitutional and shouldn’t have come out of someone who has ever been in the four walls of an educational institution not to talk of one that studied law.

It’s an embarrassment.

Meanwhile, this video below is the most intelligent thing you’d find on Nigerian internet space. If you argue against zoning, then answer the question, are Democratic tenets cast in stone?

I thought old age comes with wisdom...

This could be a subtle way to sell a planned action.

2023 is here already, if they couldn't fix Nigeria in 7 years, how long will interim government take. Lame

Afe Babalola should stop promoting anarchy. If he wants to advocate for constitutional change it can be done within the space of a legitimate administration. This is not military rule where leaders can set up any kind of government at their own whims and caprices. Nigeria's democracy is growing albeit- slowly. The circumstances of 2015 are different from 2019 and 2023. In 2015 the tension was much because it was North Vs South and 2019 it was North Vs North and the pressure was calm but next year it will be South Vs South (if PDP don't loseguard) so he should allow the slow and steady threading of our democracy continue with time things will sort themselves out.
