Russia is still using Soviet tools in this war by time they move to the next level and start using their mordern weapons Ukraine and their sponsors will have no choice that to surrender.

It is all about survival for Russia and that is why Putin can not loose in Ukraine. If he looses. He will loose the capacity to halt NATO expansion. Whether he wins or not, Finland & Sweden may still join NATO. But at least in the future, the West will not want to add Belarus to their list. Although, for now, Belarus is Russian ally. But this can change any time.

The risk of Russia being isolated is real. Russia shares land border with 15 countries. So imagine if those 15 countries join NATO.

1. Russia will be forced to fortified it's border with those countries permanently. Which will be extremely expensive to maintain.

2. The 15 NATO countries bordering Russia will likely use harassment through military drills to drain it's defence & offensive capacities. Imagine if country A decide to carry out military drill today. Russia will deploy additional troops and equipments to its border with A. So what if B decides to do it's own following day. Russia will be forced to deploy another troops and equipments again to its border with B and so on. Now imagine if two or three countries decide to do military drills at the same time.

It is like fighting a war when there is no war. This is just like a tip of the iceberg of what will happen, if NATO takes over the whole Eastern Europe. So this and many other things is what Russia is trying to avoid and that is why Putin can not lost. If he looses, it is over for Russia. Russia will be silent by the West.
