WriterNig:

Russia suspends electricity supplies to Finland, a supplier said on Friday as tensions rise over Helsinki's NATO bid amid Moscow's military campaign in Ukraine.

'We are forced to suspend the electricity import starting from May 14,' said RAO Nordic, a subsidiary of Russian state energy holding Inter RAO.

'RAO Nordic is not able to make payments for the imported electricity from Russia.'

The firm is not directly faced with Western sanctions over the invasion into Ukraine, Montel News reports. However the outlet adds Inter Rao Lietuva - its 51% owned Lithuanian subsidiary - is.

MailOnline has reached out to RAO Nordic for more information.

It comes as Russia yesterday accused Finland of 'pushing above its weight' as the country signalled its intention to join NATO.

Putin's EU ambassador vowed to bolster defences on the Russia and Finland's shared 800-mile-long border if it decided to join the alliance.

Vladimir Chizhov said if Finland joined it would lead to 'certain military-technical measures, like improving or raising the degree of defence preparations along the Finnish border'.

A move would 'certainly necessitate rethinking of Russian defence posture' but not 'necessarily [involve] troops and tanks, but certain preparations like radars, perhaps', he told Sky News.

Yesterday a former British ambassador to Russia has said there may be 'much more Russian nuclear deployment in the Baltic' areas in response to Finland potentially becoming a NATO member in light of the war in Ukraine.

Sir Tony Brenton told BBC's Newsnight programme the Kremlin may think 'it expands their view of NATO as a threat to them'.

He said: 'They will be very conscious especially as this war winds its way to a conclusion that their conventional forces have not produced the results they hoped for.

'They will be increasingly inclined therefore to use their nuclear strength as a demonstration they need to be taken seriously.

'I think we need to resign ourselves to the likelihood of much more Russian nuclear deployment in the Baltic area as a response to Finland's accession to NATO, when it comes, and Sweden's very likely one as well.'

It's really bad ,

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electricity_sector_in_Finland

The electricity sector in Finland relies on nuclear power, forest industry black liquor and wood consumption, cogeneration and electricity import from neighboring countries. In 2008 the consumption of electricity in Finland was 17 036 kWh/person. The European union (15) average was 7 409 kWh/person.[1] Co-generation of heat and electricity for industry process heat and district heating is common in Finland.

Consumption and import

Industry was the majority consumer of electricity between 1990 and 2005 with 52-54% of total consumption. The forest industry alone consumed 30-32%.[2]

Between 2000 and 2006, up to 7 TWh per year was imported from Sweden and up to 11.5 TWh from Russia. Net imports during this time varied between 7 TWh to Sweden and 7 TWh from Sweden, and 4 to 11 TWh from Russia. Since 2007, some electricity has also been imported from Estonia.[3]

In 2012, most of the imports were from Sweden (14.4 TWh net import) with Russia also contributing to the net imbalance (4.4 TWh import only), while exports to Estonia were larger than imports (1.1 TWh net export).[4]

Capacity

As of 2020, the total capacity of power generation in Finland is 17.5 GW.[8] However, not all of that is available at the same time and an increasing amount is intermittent generation, mostly from wind power (see below).

The national grid operator Fingrid, together with TSOs from other Nordic countries, produces yearly estimates about the availability of power in the winter demand peak. In 2019-2020 they estimated a peak Finnish demand of 15.3 GW, during which Finland would have 11.9 GW of production capacity, not including capacity reserves. That would have meant a shortfall of 3.4 GW to be imported from neighbors.[9] Due to a mild winter and industrial strikes the actual demand peak was only 12.4 GW and availability was never in question. No capacity reserve was activated.[10]

for those who are using the impoverished nigerian mindset to look at international politics

Finland will be fine.

Ode, PouTin, Finland saw you coming, they were ready and the little 10% they get from you is replaceable with ease, you just scored your own goal again.

Blackmail and hostage-taking is like saying to your customers never to trust or rely on you.

This is the kind of threat that led Finland to NATO in the first place.

PouTin is just too dumb and overrated.

Once again, Russia has cutoff its nose to spite it’s face. Finland has already found a replacement for the small amount of electricity Russia provided, Russia will miss the revenue, and Finland is still joining NATO.

Asia has a bigger market and population that the West want to dominate.

Russia just happen to be the Asia gatekeeper and West and NATO want to get it out of their way at all cost

I still don't get why Russia hasn't placed troops, nuclear weapons & ICBMs in Cuba, Nicaragua & Venezuela yet.

Or form their own alliance with all NATO adversaries.

Since NATO has refused to stop moving towards Russia's borders. Russia should start moving closer to NATO's borders.

That's because, from Monroe Doctrine, the US has classified the ENTIRE WESTERN HEMISPHERE as its "area of influence" and cannot condone any other military alliance besides one with the US

Finland has never been dependent on Russia. Only 10% of the electricity was imported and that 10% has already been replaced by other Nordic countries.

This is good for Finland and nordic countries, the former soviet union members need to detach themselves fully from Russia, Russia is so stupid to have used their queen as a first move, so there's no more deterrent to Finland's onward move to join the NATO bloc other than nuclear threats, but with this makes Finland more independent to make future decisions without the coercion of russia

At least they have learned that sending troops and tanks don't work.
Finland can find another way to get electricity supply, then come back and join NATO in peace

The amount of electricity suspended is insignificant...just 10% of what Finland consumes.

Because the Russians are thankfully smarter than you are.

This isn’t the 60s. Long range ICBMs, hypersonic missiles and submarine launched nukes exist. Nobody needs to try something as provocative as that anymore.

Besides, none of these countries would willingly host Russian nukes. Russia is a fading world power and an unreliable ally, so they wouldn’t be interested.

So imagine Finland, a European country cannot generate its own electricity which means they are on Niger Republic and Benin third world level.

Nigeria is better than a lot of countries but our inferiority complex won't let us see it.
The electricity that Russia supplies is 10% of Finland power consumption so no come give yourself hope.
