It often amazes me why the Hausa Muslims often find it so difficult understanding English when interpreting religious comments or issues.
In the south where you have the majority as well-educated and mannered, Deborah of a girl wouldn't have been so gruesomely murdered.

A WhatsApp group was set up mainly for academic purposes, a forum created for sharing views about tests and their exams and some people went and posted Islamic events there to derail it...are such posts not truly useless in this context? Such posts would have been useful in Islamic religious fora. By calling it useless she was simply saying they were irrelevant to the purpose for which the group was created. In my children school's WhatsApp fora ( from JS1-SS3), if you post useless or irrelevant matters, you could be barred for a term as a parent. You can only post comments considered useful in that context.

Deborah was from Niger state, a religiously sensitive state for that matter, now schooling in Sokoto, the seat of caliphate. She of course must have understood what blasphemy was all about as educated as she was. She was said to be the best in her set, clearing all her last semester's exams and her colleagues were even wondering how did she manage to pas so excellently and she said it was Jesus oo!. So, someone like her would have understood the clear consequences of blasphemy.
She was killed out of ignorance and hate, simple. She didn't mention Muhammed, neither did she insult him in any way. This isn't the first time it's happening and the reason the madness must stop. Had she insulted mohamed or drawn something about him to incite his followers, then one would have said she went too far. According to her classmate by the name Aisha who was interviewed, she even apologised while she was being dragged out for stoning, the idea she never welcomed when confronted earlier about the statement as she maintained she didn't do anything wrong with her voice message because such posts negated the purpose of setting up that group.

I hope and pray this doesn't snowball into religious war cos here in Lagos today, people were mad while talking of the manner she was killed. Our Muslim brothers also condemned it in strong terms after listening to her voice message which was translated into English.

Illiteracy is a disease which only education can heal.
