Yes taking it into context he was trying to make the team aim higher. Trust Mourinho takes every competition he finds himself very seriously. He is one of the few managers that uses his first/best eleven in every games irrespective of the competition or team he is up against.

E.g Carling/capital/Carabao cup in England.

Reasons why Gaurdiola and Klopp succeed is because they have the complete control of their squad without external influences like former players, board or ex-managers.
Gaurdiola can discard any player without consequence. He may decide today that he want to sell de bruyne and the board will back him for it. Man United coaches after Ferguson never had that kind of liberty. They are constantly in the media, criticism here and there, they talk about style of play all the time. so it really hard to succeed under these type of condition.
Gaurdiola rejected Man United bcus he knows the danger. if not Man United is as rich as Man City and even bigger why didn't he take the job but he knew he won't have complete control. Imagine if it Man United that Gaurdiola lost the final and semi final in the Champions League due to his overthinking, the media would have fried him.
Mourinho taking up that united job was a big mistake and i know that he knows it now. He his an arrogant person who can't allow them dictate for him and to even clear things up, it is only in Man United that Mourinho signed useless players. Throughout his career, he never really signed big players except from Man United and all of them flopped so this is to tell you that Man United is their own problem not coach. Why did you think Ten Hag negotiated a good deal bcus he now understand better and i can tell you, if Mourinho or former coaches were to return to Man United they will negotiate better terms and overall control of their affairs to.
