Yes taking it into context he was trying to make the team aim higher. Trust Mourinho takes every competition he finds himself very seriously. He is one of the few managers that uses his first/best eleven in every games irrespective of the competition or team he is up against.

E.g Carling/capital/Carabao cup in England.

I agree with you on that. However, Pep met a title winning team with established squad. Yet in his first season he changed his entire defence (Stones, Walker, Malanga, etc) plus keeper. Kompany was on bench even as a captain, Yaya was benched and later banished so was Joe Hart, Zabeleta etc. Second season Pep bought Ederson to replace Bravo who he bought to replace Hart.

If Mourinho was backed against Pogba just as Pep was against Yaya, Man U would have been better for it.

You lied, Guardiola used Clichy, Sagana, Zabaleta, Kompany and Otamendi in his first season. He won ten straight matches but they dropped along the way. Even Kompany and Otamendi were used to win two premier league.
