Does Nigeria Have An Intelligence Gathering Outfit? by Blackteeth(m): 10:41am On Jul 17, 2011
I don't really know if Nigeria has an intelligence or spy outfit. A sophisticated Intelligence gathering network will be a great tool to distmantle boko haram or render them powerless. Spies can be deployed to those troubled areas to blend and mix up with the local population, and in fact probably get recruited as boko haram members. This would enable them uncover who they leadership team of boko harm and their sponsors are, where they hide, where they get their bombs from, what their future plans are and where they intend to hit next.
After those information has been gotten, it should then be passed on to the so-called JTF for them them to move in and locate exactly where the targets are based and annihilate them. Not just sending JTF to the region without a clear target to fire sporadically at any man and cattle moving and then come back. Does Nigeria have an intelligence outfit?

This can be dangerous for their own lives if they are discovered by Boko Haram.

@Horus. Thats not a problem. Its just a question of maintaining that high level of secrecy to an extent that spies shouldn't identify other spies to avoid triggering any chain of implication.

You probably haven't heard of the SSS (State Security Service) and NIA (National Intelligence Agency) all head quartered in Asokoro Abuja.
Re: Does Nigeria Have An Intelligence Gathering Outfit? by Wallie(m): 3:09pm On Jul 18, 2011
National Intelligence Agency (NIA) is the outfit responsible for intelligence and counterintelligence operations.

It is said that a picture can tell a thousand stories.
What else do we need to make us understand that so-called intelligence agencies in Nigeria are complete useless.
They are only known for one thing, harassing the lives of hardworking, peace-loving fellow human beings.

It's a big shame on those in govenment.

Nigeria has the National Intelligence Agency (NIA) but I strongly believe that they are ineffective. There are a lot of smart Nigerians but Nigeria has failed in making use of these smart individuals. Nigeria can be defined as a country that knows how best to misuse her resources angry

In response to that portion of your post, I personally believe the government has enough knowledge about those using BH to cause trouble.

Yes na! We have it plenty plenty. For example;

In the West, OPC don't need to see a thief before arresting him. They only need to break an egg, the face of thief will appear in a mirror and the thief will submit himself like willy willy.

In the North, You don't need to hold the bible for Boko haram to know that you are a potential suya. Go to Bauchi and shout Jesus is God, they will intelligently recognize you as an Infidelistic suya.

In the East, Hmmmmm Bakassi boys! all they need to shout is Iiiiiiisakabaaaaaaa, and you will confess your crime orrr.

In the South, Rub bleaching cream and look like an American, then you will see intelligence climbing each other over your Dollar value.

You go fear intelligence na   cool cool cool cool grin grin grin grin

We have SSS everywhere in this country, they are always using Peugeot 206 mostly in white color. They usually frequent joints and club houses. Anytime you have issue with them, they will harass you with their pistol saying ''don't you know I am SS/2x''

Nigeria has intelligence gathering outfits. The problem is not the outfits, but the people involve in intelligence gathering. Corruption has eaten deep into the system of our security agencies. Until we nip corruption in the bud, these agencies will never perform as expected.

Send these guys in the quest to infiltrate BH, I fear they might turn and demand money from BH and disclose those who sent them.

Make Nigeria corruption-free or corruption-less, then some of these anti-Nigerian behaviours will undo themselves.

Errrr,I thunk those uniformed men in those photos above are policemen and not men of the SSS and NIA/DIA(the intelligence gathering agencies in Nigeria)

@ Poster,

Of course Nigeria's got 'em,they just need to step up their game, collaborate with foreign intelligence agencies and share info amongst themselves for better results

The Boko Haram crisis is first of all a political issue more than a security one.
Nigeria is a gathering of tribes according to Wole Soyinka but trouble is the tribes didn't agree on how they are going to live together.
Until we recognise the need to talk and discuss the basis of our unity, I'm afraid we'll have many more Boko Haram's to deal with in future.

It is possible but many are not motivated cos if the worst happens and they are killed,no one would be there for their families.

Like the Isreali Intelligence community, the Nigerian Intelligence Services comprises of three main arms namely FOREIGN, DOMESTIC, MILITARY. The agencies that constitute these three arms are:

FOREIGN
NATIONAL INTELLIENCE AGENCY (NIA):
The National Intelligence Agency is the nation's most secretive intelligence service tasked with foreign intelligence i.e. it's tasked with the overt or covert collection of information/intelligence on targets outside the nation's borders. Operatives tend to work closely with the Ministry of Foreign affairs.

DOMESTIC
DEPARTMENT OF STATE SERVICE/STATE SECURITY SERVICE (DSS/SSS):
This is the nation’s domestic intelligence agency, similar to the Israeli GSS/SHABAK/SHIN-BET. It is tasked with ensuring the national security of the Federal Republic through the overt or covert collection of intelligence on domestic threats using HUMINT or SIGINT assets, and the neutralization of these threats. The service is also charged with the protection of senior government officials e.g the President, the VP, visiting Heads of States, Senate President, Governors, etc, and their families. Thus, they form the close protection detail of the aforementioned VIPs.

MILITARY
DEFENCE INTELLIGENCE AGENCY (DIA):
Again, like the Israeli Military Intelligence arm (Amam), the DIA is tasked with the collection of military related intelligence. Sources of such come from the respective intelligence units of the three arms of the Armed Forces i.e. Naval Intelligence, Army Intelligence (DMI?), and the NAF intelligence Unit.

In addition to the aforementioned services, the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) also possesses its own units. These are the FCID, SCID, and the Intelligence Bureau (IB). These units are tasked with the collation of criminal intelligence.

Overall, intelligence collected and processed are forwarded to the Joint Intelligence Board (JIB) under the office of the NSA for collation and presented to the National Security Council with the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as its Chairman.

It's a pity that you think so. Yes, like all government agencies, the SSS has its flaws. But I will vouch for it ANY DAY. At the height of the Niger-Delta crises, covert operators of the SSS and undercover officers from the Police were solely responsible some most of the military successes achieved. People tend to hear more about the raids carried out by either the Army or NPF MOPOL composite units of the JTF. What they don't know is that the success of these raids were wholly dependent of the actions of these brave men who were responsible for the covert infiltration of the various militant or cult groups, live under harsh conditions, and identify high value targets, arms supply routes, arms caches.

And long before the start of the Boko Haram menace, the SSS foresaw it coming. The service was responsible for the initial arrests of the group's late leader, but the Abuja High Court acquitted him.

You are quite right that Nigeria has three intelligence arms just like the Israelis.  However that is where the similarity ends.  Comparing Nigerian intelligence agencies to the Israeli outfits is like comparing a bicycle without a handlebar , to a fighter jet.  And that is being charitable.  In my opinion the Israelis would hear it loud and clear in Tel Aviv if anyone so much as farts at Aso Rock.   Now,  I am  dead serious.  They are that good.
