German economy minister warns of waning “unity” in the EU as the bloc is struggling to agree on oil embargo against Russia

The unity the EU demonstrated after Russia launched its offensive in Ukraine is starting to “crumble,” German Economy Minister Robert Habeck said on Sunday. The warning comes ahead of the bloc’s summit to discuss a new sanctions package against Moscow and a potential oil embargo.

After Russia's attack on Ukraine, we saw what can happen when Europe stands united. With a view to the summit tomorrow, let's hope it continues like this. But it is already starting to crumble and crumble again," Habeck told a news conference.

The EU has struggled to agree on imposing the oil embargo on Russia, with multiple member countries voicing concerns that the move would become fatal for their economies. Hungary, which receives most of its oil from Russia, has been the most prominent opponent of the embargo, comparing the potential effect of a full ban to “an atomic bomb.” Similar concerns over the embargo have been voiced by other landlocked nations, namely Czechia and Slovakia.

Earlier this week, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen offered an explanation as to why the EU still continues to buy Russian oil.

“If we would completely, immediately, as of today cut off the [Russian] oil, [Russian President Vladimir] Putin might be able to take the oil that he does not sell to the EU to the world market, where the prices will increase, and sell it for more – and that would fill his war chests,” von der Leyen said in an interview with MSNBC.

The EU diplomats have reportedly tried to come up with a compromise solution to the sanctions deadlock, kick-starting the embargo with banning deliveries of Russian oil by sea while exempting pipelines from the potential restrictions. The attempt, however, has apparently failed, with the EU nations now set to try and agree on the restrictions during the summit scheduled for Monday and Tuesday.

The EU has imposed multiple packages of sanctions on Russia after it launched a large-scale offensive against Ukraine in late February

It must not crumble.
Re: EU Unity On Russia Sanctions ‘crumbling’ – Germany by RepoMan007: 10:50am On May 30, 2022
That's because they were hasty in imposing those sanctions. Russia has too much gas and oil market share to be pushed aside. They also have too much share in the food and agriculture market and have grounded Europe's second biggest food and fertilizer basket.
A gradual sanction would have been better and given the EU time to adapt. They are just creating hardship for themselves but should rather soften those sanctions and keep supporting Ukraine heavily to avoid giving Putin more share of food, fertilizer and energy market.

It must not crumble.
It will. However that's not the worst thing that can happen to the EU.
The worst will be to allow Putin gain control of Europe's two biggest food producers and two of Europe's top energy producers.

If Russia keep weaponizing food supply and fertilizer market remains unstable, it will lead to destabilization of food supply around the whole earth. Bread will no longer be within a poor man's reach.

This war has affected everyone, Russia,USA and the whole of Europe…
You know how mighty Russia is,yet you decide to play this dumb game of supremacy or whatever you call that in your little mind…
This is called boomerang.

I know about Russia during Libya war and Syria war.
Russia don’t stop NATO no flying zone over Libya because Russia have no big influence in Libya but Syria war shows Russia was ready for military against anyone.
USA and all her allies made noises and even Turkey shoot down Russia jet.
When Turkey shoot down Russia jet and called emergency NATO meeting, that’s when Turkey knew NATO is paper tiger, when all NATO members were talking rubbish to Turkey.

Even Kurds that are anti Assad government need Russia military help to save them from Turks military not British or French military in Syria.

grin i love this series. EU now knows Ruskies are in for the long haul.

And in Putin's conversation with Erdogan, it was confirmed that Russia can export significant amounts of fertilizers and agricultural products if the relevant anti-Russian sanctions are lifted, the Kremlin said.

The greatest weapon the west has is MSM not even the military. Russia is a superpower but the west never accords her the respect she deserves due to fall of USSR which dwindled her resources from 1991-1999.

Now, she is back and she is getting the respect she deserves.

Russia did not even add Uranium, Nickel etc to the sanctions.

The Times: Russia takes control of the global wheat market.

According to the British publication, Russia's goal to increase agricultural exports by 50% by 2024 is quite achievable. An important factor in the growth of Russian exports is wheat, the world export of which Moscow has already taken under control.

In April alone, Russian grain exports increased by 18%. Significantly increased world grain prices have allowed the Russian budget to receive $1.9 billion in tax revenues on grain exports since the beginning of the year.

In addition, the publication notes that the export of wheat from Russia covers the deficit formed in the world grain market, including a drop in supplies from Ukraine by 32%.
