Former Lagos State Governor, Bola Tinubu has changed the mode of his ongoing campaign, amidst plans by President Muhammadu Buhari to work with governors to pick his successor.

Mr Tinubu, who is one of the leading aspirants for the presidential ticket of the ruling party, the All Progressives Congress, APC, spoke in Ogun State on Thursday.

Speaking in Yoruba, Tinubu said for over 25 years, he provided a political refuge for former Vice President Atiku Abubakar when he was chased out of the PDP by former President Olusegun Obasanjo. He narrated how he offered his ACN platform to Nuhu Ribadu in 2011.

While speaking, Mr Tinubu also directed his jab at his host, Governor Dapo Abiodun, saying “this one (Mr Abiodun), would he have become governor if I had not backed him?”

Even President Buhari was not spared in the jab.

“If not me that led the war from the front, Buhari would not have emerged as the president. He contested first, second and third times, but lost. He even said on television that he won’t contest again,” he said.

Mr Atiku, who is the presidential candidate of the PDP, contested for President in 2007 on the platform of Action Congress, the party of the former Lagos State governor.

In 2011, Mr Ribadu, former Economic and Financial Crimes Commission also contested on the platform of the ACN in 2011.

Across the country, Tinubu has sponsored several political associates for political offices, some of who are in the contest for the same presidential ticket.

Tinubu is believed to have nominated the Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo as Vice President in 2015. The two politicians are in the race for the presidential ticket of the party.

This outburst may not be unconnected with the recent pronouncement by President Muhammadu Buhari that State governors on the platform of the APC should back him to select a successor.

The president left the country immediately after dropping the bombshell on the party.

DAILY POST findings revealed that the statement by the president has created sharp division among the governors

In several of the meetings held, some governors from the North have called for a candidate from the North to battle the former Vice President Atiku. While some governors, who feel they are closer to the President, are seeing themselves as likely candidates.

Governors have been meeting behind closed doors to suggest candidates to the President, however, they have become more divided.

A source in Tinubu’s camp, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said Tinubu has switched the campaign to payback and demanding from loyalists to return the favour.

“We are barely 4 days away from the convention. The proposed consensus candidacy from southwest is not feasible and many of the aspirants from the region are not willing to step down.

“So, as you have seen in Abeokuta, the mode of the campaign has changed. While Sen Kashim Shettima may beg delegates in Calabar, at home, we have to remind them they owe us. The governor of Ogun State is not invincible. He is running for the second time, so it is crucial he is reminded of that fact,” he said.

Another source said the statement by the president has emboldened candidates from the north, citing the case of Ahmad Lawan, who has intensified his campaign since Atiku won the primaries.

It would be recalled that Mr Lawan appointed Orji Uzor Kalu as his campaign DG, while about 25 politicians from the southeast also gave open endorsement to the Senate President.

“We cannot take chances any longer. With reports that governors are debating power remaining in the North, there is a need for a change of approach,” the source said.

“At this point, taking the battle to Ogun State, the State of Osinbajo, is like sending a clear message to Abuja that even in Ogun State, Tinubu is strong.

“If you have been monitoring the primary in Ogun State. Two close allies of Tinubu defeated two incumbents. Olamilekan Yayi defeated Tolu Odebiyi and Gbenga Daniel defeated Lekan Mustapha.”

While campaigns are ongoing, everyone involved is still waiting for President Buhari, who is in Spain for a state visit. However, all aspirants are in last push for the finishing line.

Who made you the governor of Lagos State too? What was your political profile before you became the governor of Lagos State. No vacancy for you in Aso Rock sir. It has been occupied by a competent person. Besides, the innocent blood of late Funsho Williams is still crying for vengeance...Is it by force to become president? We don't want you sir.

If you have seen where someone is about to get drowned in the ocean, you will understand what is happening to Jagaban.

In life , you cannot plant yam and expect to harvest apple. Neither can you plant coconut and expect to harvest agabado ( Corn). Breakfast , lunch and dinner are being prepared to be served to him at once.

All Jagaban has done to others for years is being served hot , juicy and fresh on him. Karma is real!

Inasmuch as I would hate it for Tinubu to become president (from fry pan to fire; I might even flee the country if he does), I think it would be fair to conduct a primary. Haba, in as much as I dislike him, how he go feel if this man who has been looking forward to being president for half of his life is deprived because some murthfuckas from nowhere just popped out nowhere and brush him aside illegally.... In the name of consensus? Buhari should do the right
Tinubu will never be president, it just cannot happen. But at least let his defeat be the one that even he would accept. No need for cheating

Buhari annointed candidate is AMAECHI...

I would have said Osibanjo but if Buhari wanted Osibanjo he would have started grooming him by giving his VP more state responsibilities..

I have more than 10 reasons why Buhari will choose ameachi..

1. Amaechi led northern PDP leaders and Governors in 2013 to leave the PDP for APC
2. Ameachi went against the former president Goodluck Jonathan about major policies which made the northerners love him more
3. Amaechi was appointed DG of Buhari campaign twice and he came out victoriously
4. Amaechi is like Buhari son, he appointed him to lead the transportation sector which is one of his key successes in Buhari administration
5. Amaechi was appointed Dan Amanar in Buhari Buhari Homestate.. that should mean something
6. Amaechi instrumented the appointment of Abdullah Adamu as the national chairman (NPDP faction)
7. The people in Amaechi team should tell you there are Core Buhari men
8. Ameachi is an experienced politician and leader.. Led speakers and governors forum among equals

Lol grin

Nothing like primaries

It must be consensus

Tilumbu does it to others so it’s perfectly fair that he should bend over and receive a very big, thick and long consensus from others too cool

Not again.

Some things are not just adding up with the swelling desperation flying by day and night, its seems power particularly the one that comes with being with the presidency must have one of the secret of immortality or a special privilege of remaining forever young in this part of the world.

Beacuse the desperation is getting out of hand, don't even know what to say anymore.

My own be say, me o, I don't like either tinubu or atiku candidacy. But since pdp has given atiku chance again, I would hv loved tinubu pinched against atiku cos that's the person that can outmatch him dollar for dollars and unfortunately that's what win election in Nigeria either we like it or not.

And don't let me be sentimental here. Everyone has been accusing tinubu and South West both offline and online, here and there of forcing buhari on us in 2015, buhari even said it himself that without tinubu, he will not become president.
Now tinubu said what has always been said by those who felt buhari was imposed on us and wanted power by all means not really wanting to serve. Though he said in a angry manner, but with facts and everyone goes gaga? What really changed? Human beings are very difficult to please.

The only decorum he supposed to throw in was addressing ogun governor as 'eleyi'. To me, thats too harsh. I believe he has gotten Intel about their gang up against him despite supporting them to get to their levels politically.
Either he wins the primary or not, tinubu still hold lots of influences in politics. They just want to clamp it to his region.
We are watching.
