IMEI Guide: Understanding Mobile Security by EitanDeCosta: 7:44am On Jun 08, 2022
Is it possible to explain the IMEI code?

An IMEI, or International Mobile Equipment Identity, is a unique identifier for each mobile device. Equipment has its own special serial number (inevitably to cellular devices). The mobile phone number is issued by the manufacturer, much like any other piece of equipment, such as a car's dashboard.

The IMEI number of a SIM card-based phone is used to identify the device. There are 15-digit numbers that are guaranteed to be unique and universally recognized. Please note that a dual-sim phone will have two globally unique IMEI numbers: 15 digits each.

The IMEI Numbers Are Divided Up.

A device's IMEI number is made up of 15 unique digits ordered in the following pattern: WW-XXXXX-YYYYYY-Z.

The following is an explanation of how an IMEI is typically set up:

Sets the TAC reporting body identity to indicate the GSMA authorized reporting body (Typical Allocation Code)

As you may see, the real TAC numbers are represented by this sequence: xxxxxxxx.

This code is used to identify the individual cell phone.

When used with GSM handsets, Z serves as a digit checker.

What role does the IMEI play in the network?

With the TAC (i.e., the Typical Allocation Code), the cellular module or modem is usually connected (in cellular IoT). A mobile phone's unique identification number (IMEI) not only identifies the model, but it also certifies the device's release year, make, and other technical details like managed mobility services.

It's a sign that the device, module, or modem has been approved and passed the required regulatory examination if a TC is assigned by a reporting organization. It is possible for the network to authorize device (and signal) connection permissions after this level of regulatory inspection and approval by the TAC.

Is it possible to tamper with an IMEI number?

Even if the manufacturer does not intend to fake an IMEI number, it is easy to do so with simple programming skills. Thieves frequently employ this tactic by downloading apps from Google and Apple's respective app stores. When a stolen phone can no longer be identified by its IMEI, they are interested in tampering with its IMEI.

When is an IMEI number necessary?

The first step is to record the device's IMEI number and keep it somewhere secure (ideally, write it down on a piece of paper). Many people have trouble recalling the 15-digit IMEI (internal mobile equipment identification) number. The IMEI number is required if your smartphone is lost or stolen in order to report it to the authorities. This IMEI number will be used by the carrier to totally prohibit the devices. Because of this, the IMEI number should never be given out to anybody else.

What is the purpose of an IMEI number?

You may think of it as your phone or tablet's unique fingerprint. Using these unique 15-digit numbers, authorities, the phone carrier or the manufacturer may trace down a lost or stolen phone. A GSM (Global System for Mobile Communication) phone has a unique IMEI (International Mobile Equipment Identity). Also, it may be used to deactivate the device or check the status of the newly acquired phone.

What is the IMEI of my phone?

It is not just utilized when a device is stolen, but also when the device maker or carrier provider needs to evaluate an error or complaint. The IMEI number of your device may be found by one of the following methods:

1. In order to get the IMEI number of your phone, you may call *#06# on any phone. There is no need for you to transmit or push the call button to get the IMEI code(s).

2. There are two ways to go to the settings app on an iPhone or iPad with cellular service. To learn more about your iPad or iPhone, go to general and hit about on the device.

The IMEI number may also be found by scrolling down. Make a note of it in a secure location. The IMEI number may be found in the sim card tray of your iPhone if you are unable to utilize it or access it.

Starting with the iPhone 6s, this feature is accessible. However, the IMEI can be found on the bottom rear of the iPad (which includes the iPhone SE, earlier iPhones, and iPod Touches) and may be used to identify the device.

3. To access settings on Android, go to your app drawer and tap on the settings icon. Check the IMEI under the battery if your Android smartphone has one that can be removed.

When you remove the battery from your Android device, you will need to turn it off. Alternatively, you may search for your Sim Tray, which will have the 15-digit IMEI number etched into it.

The 15-digit IMEI may also be found in the Android About section of your settings. Make a note of your digit someplace for future reference. Make sure your sim card lock on android is safe.

4. You may also look for your original phone packing as a fourth option. To find your package, you must first identify the barcode label on it. It is possible to clearly mark the barcode and the serial number next to the IMEI.

Do I have the right to give out my IMEI code?

The IMEI number is considered private information and should not be published publicly. As a vendor, it's best to keep the IMEI private until the customer has paid for the phone in full.

This decision is based on the fact that openly releasing the IMEI number might pose a significant danger. You might lose it to a hacker pretending to be a buyer. Swappa (and other user-to-user marketplaces) have a smooth strategy to ensure the interest of both buyers and sellers, notwithstanding certain reservations. Again, never compromise on your privacy! Otherwise you can get stuck in sim swapping.

Which one of my two IMEIs corresponds to which of my devices?

From this point on, you should be able to discern that an IMEI is not associated with a certain SIM card, but rather with a specific piece of hardware (as its identifier). Neither the UICC card number nor the sim card should be used in conjunction with this. Official parties like the device maker, the cell-phone carrier or the police may locate a specific smartphone using its unique IMEI (International Mobile Equipment Identity).
