First of all have the fear of GOD and the Governor should remember he will die one day plus whatever he do today will become history tomorrow. The things i think Nigerians will benefit most would be Power ( electricity ) , Good Roads, Education, and creation of employment.

Wallie:

The government should not necessarily set up industries for themselves but that’s not stopping the government from implementing an enabling environment towards a strategic vision.

Can private sectors function when there’s no access to funding and state laws are working against them?

That's why i said the government needs to chip in with enabling laws and policies that points to a strategic vision. There are a lot of anti investment laws in our statute books that needs to be repealed.

An example is the Land Use Act which without being repealed will cause us to never have mass access to  mortgages/housing/properties.  Another example is the Railways Act of 1955 which bars private investment in railways (as an analogy, imagine if the only airline in Nigeria is Nigeria Airways).

On a final note, funding to do serious long term business in Nigeria cannot come from within Nigeria. Ask the IOCs, telcos, Dangote, Oando etc. Nigerian banks will only grant notes of short-term tenor at usurious interest rates. Serious investors will need to procure funds from outside Nigeria

Our problem is being cause by our leader's,example how can you give a illiterate a post that was suppose to give to a graduate and they will start tormenting the elite, some times they will be saying that illiterate  with money is better than a professor imagine the insult.
Some of this insult is being cause by our leaders you people should do some thing because it is discouraging our young youth to further there studies after s.s.c.e.some of them will be saying that how can they go to university to west four [4] years, that is better for them to travel abroad in search of money or do any other type of business that will be giving them money, please you top officials should help us graduate to secure a job is on fir,how can some of us will be saving the illiterate because of circumstances.
I will be so happy if my suggested opinion is being ion out and put in practice.
Best regard Stanley.

This one is tough.
What will really benefit Nigerians the most is good governance, which is kind of impossible under the current constitution.

Anyway . . . I think a governor would do well to focus on the following three areas:

1. Improve social infrastructure. Start by providing free or highly subsidized healthcare, as well as education.

2. Land reforms: Float a back-to-the land scheme, provide arable land and farming supplements.

3. Attract investment: Find a way to exploit the natural resources of the state, by attracting investors to exploit these resources, provide jobs, and a new economy for your state.

Don't bother with white elephant projects. Most governors in this new era, Fashola included, are heavily into window dressing. Meaningless beautification, etc, while the state is suffering. Waste of time and money.

kalokalo:

Nigerians are inward socialists. They prefer everything to be provided by the government. All the problems listed on this thread are investment opportunities for savvy entrepreneurs. Unfortunately we complain in frustration about it for decades e.g. telecoms until South Africans came to solve this problem and are carting billions back to their country.

Electricity supply, water supply, housing, healthcare, education, waste management, agriculture etc are all investment opportunities that private firms with long-term outlook will reap bountifully from considering that they are basic necessities with inelastic demand. The government only need to chip in with enabling laws and policies.

As far I'm concerned, the only thing our governments should focus on are (1) law and order (2) Enforcement of contracts. Every other things should be private sector / commercially driven albeit subject to regulatory oversight. Experience has taught us over 50 years of independence that the Nigerian state is too inept and corrupt to provide any goods and service well. They should leave it to the private sector.

This is exactly why this country CANNOT develop. If its not for me, my wife, my family and my dog then let government do it. Incidentally the same thoughts go through government officials, so.

Why can't we so stuff for ourselves. Are our capabilities only limited to population expansion, haba. Investment is for expansion. Establishment which primarily includes the will to do things comes from within. Britain was well into World War II before calling on America for help. I never knew the Chinese runaway economy was triggered by the West even though they need Western technology, African minerals and European markets to fuel it. In short no one will develop you. You have to do so yourself.

Isn't one of the conditions for taking a loan the need to have a sound plan and a robust track record. What is ours. It is far easier for them foreigners to push their own companies into Nigeria than to give us raw cash. But when they see a nation of billionaires corruptly stashing money in their banks and a people who don't want to pay for anything, undecided undecided undecided

@ poster:

you need to conduct a NEED ASSESSMENT SURVEY by any research agency in Nigeria. the problems of the people will be much peculiar to the state and the area and also get opinion of pple who dont have access to the internet (ABCDE socila class represented)
that is the best way to knjow what the people want and where governor shld focus and make impact.

only those wearing the shoes knows where it pinches them

some nairalanders in Enugu are giving u suggestions for Kwara state, it may not be the case.

i can suggest some research agencies if u r interested to know.

Nigerians just need a conducive environment to excel and be happy. Mainly zero tolerance for corruption, mechanised farming on a large scale with govt subsidy and support, good roads and transportation system, power supply to boost small scale enterprises, subsidised and high quality education, well equipped and staffed hospitals with simple community health insurance that works and access to potable water. With these in place unemployment and poverty will drastically reduce.

The singular most important problem every sane government should think about is steady Electricity. Its no coincidence electricity is called POWER.

With electricity, every other thing falls into place. Every other form of development is POWERED. Industrial development, stable investments from home and abroad, a healthy lifestyle etc
Re: What Will Benefit Nigerians Most? Pls Advice A Governor! by eewule(m): 2:10pm On Jul 21, 2011
POWER - It all begins with POWER.  Fixing Nigeria's power supply alone will also (partly) fix the employment problem and
joblessness of our youths, will support existing businesses and create an acceptable working environment for foreign investment. It will also affect the crime rate as with more jobs, there will be fewer jobless youths in the streets,

EVERY STATE GOVERNOR IN THE COUNTRY INCLUDING THE PRESIDENT AND ALL MINISTERS SHOULD STOP EVERYTHING ELSE AND FOCUS ONLY ON FIXING NIGERIA'S POWER SUPPLY.  Maybe such a combined effort will solve the problem, as they are not really solving any other problems anyway.

THIS IS TRUE!
I ALSO BELIEVE POWER IS THE MOST IMPORTANT!
EMPLOYMENT SHOULD BE NEXT BUT THEY CAN ONLY ACHIEVE THIS BY WOOING INVESTORS WHO WILL CREATE AVENUES FOR EMPLOYMENT.
INVESTORS WILL ONLY GO TO PLACES WHERE THEY CAN DO THEIR BUSINESS IN PEACE AND HAVE THE FACILITIES TO REACH THEIR MARKET EASILY.
LET THE GOVERNOR MAKE THE STATE TO BE KNOWN FOR A CERTAIN GOOD AND HIGH-IN-DEMAND PRODUCT.
THE REST WILL BECOME ACCOLADES. NO GOVERNOR HAS YET ACHIEVED THIS. (though Fashola is trying he is far from achieving this).

Imagine Omegasavings & Loans (Mortgage Bankers) CliffTop Estate in Port Harcourt. What Brain could give this investment? Still selling for all to make money from as agents. Contact David-08035214480
