Just give a reason why you should not be punished. Any reason at all will suffice.

The letter never read you should give a reason why you drank the water from the bottle, it only read you should justify your actions. A smart person will justify his action which will lead to little or no punishment.

As long as it is in the law, you deserve to be queried irrespective of how inconsequential the law is.
