5 Things Upcoming Artistes Should Do Before Signing A Record Deal

Written By Amechi Okoli

So, your talent and hard work as an upcoming artiste has finally been recognized by a record label, and they are ready to give you a deal.

But before you sign that contract, be sure to do these 5 things first!

1. Check The Reputation Of The Label

Make out time to find out what you can about the people behind the label that wants to sign you.

Are they operating legally? Do they have a history of screwing their artistes over? Or is the label CEO a controversial character like Death Row's Suge Knight?.

Trust me, you wouldn’t want to go down with your label executives if they are caught doing shady businesses!

2. Retain some creative control

Your raw talent is one of the major reasons a record label would want to sign you in the first place. However, they may decide to repackage you and switch up your musical direction.

And while this isn’t necessarily a bad thing, it would be wise to retain some creative control so that you can flow naturally with the musical styles the label suggests.

3. Renegotiate the original contract

If your label makes an initial offer of 20%, it means there’s a chance they can shoot it up to 40%, but only if you ask for it.

Always ask for more, because if they really want you, they wouldn’t mind adding a little extra on the initial offer.

4. Hire a lawyer

Your contract will be filled with big words and terminologies that you may not understand.

But guess who would? Your lawyer!

Never sign a contract without having a lawyer looking at it first and advising you accordingly.

Don’t use the label's lawyer either. Hire yours!

5. Prepare for the end of the contract

Every contract can be terminated, which is why you need to understand the terms of contract termination before you sign.

What happens if a member of your group goes solo, or another label offers you a better deal along the line?

Consider these and let the terms of termination be spelt out clearly!

If you find these tips helpful, then kindly share. Someone out there might also find this information useful.

Good luck!

The current Nigeria is dysfunctional. How can a struggling sapa-hit musician who dey trenches for long looking for sponsor or label to push out his songs do all these things listed with? The game is rigged against him and he is begging to be given a chance.

Well, I bet he will begin to see clearly and start asking questions after one commercially popular song and months of good food and packaging. Before this point, na abeg help me him dey.

I feel you. But it's better to do the right thing now and enjoy the fullness of your record deal later.
