That said, what I would expect is the person to do a postgraduate (MSc, MA, MEng, PhD) or a professional course (like CFA, ACA, CIMA, ACCA, CIM, ICAN, CIPS, Prince II) to boost their prospects, not MBA.

Always on point.

For me, i would rather do a professional qualification while on the job. Each of the above professional qualifications takes 3-4yrs to achieve without one being sure one would obtain them within that time frame. Also, when someone else is funding your education you may not want to gamble with your chances.

Nigerian employers seem not to be interested in people with skills or professional qualifications. They feel threatened and think you are coming in to take over their jobs.I have two I.T certifications and attended a top Indian IT training school in Nigeria and spent a huge amount. So, the problem is not in getting certifications etc. It's luck, God and connection.

We, Nigerians youth, are faced with a lot of challenges. Getting visa to most countries where post graduate studies are cheaper is sometimes very challenging. Not to complain but the situation is bad. I also tried Canada during my application period for an MA in Economics at the University of Alberta. Got the admission after all the GRE, TOEFL etc  but was denied the visa for no just reason. Wetin your man go do na? I didn't want to settle for anything short of a top school, so i opted for an MBA since i am really not targeting a managerial position. I see myself more of an academic person than an office person.

My point is, not that most of us are ignorant of most of the things you enumerated but the country is as frustrating as hell. But we have to keep pushing. Yeah, we Nigerians like complaining, but  what do you expect in a country where there is no middle class. You either up or down. Enough said.

That is why I never rest in heaping curse on the so-called rulers and rejoice at their deaths or misery.

Yet some Nigerians will be showering encomium, praise and empathy on them because they believe "you do not talk back of the dead" or "respect your elders".

WTF is wrong with Nigerian schools Eight courses in a semester of about 3 months, haba!

This is supposed to be a ''masters'' degree program for goodness sake.

How then will you master the eight courses within 3 months?

I have spent almost 3 months now designing marketing plans for few MNCs even though my Uni is not a top rated UK univ. How then will i be able to do so if i was to take eight courses per semester wink

One thing i enjoy about UK univs is their level of flexibility, you learn a lot under little stress.

I nearly died in our Nigerian university during undergrad, taking about 11 course per semester and yet i know very little of those courses. No knowledge was gained in the real sense of it after taking about 11 courses, i only struggled to ensure that each was completed no matter how.

Here in my MBA, why do i need to take courses in micro-macro economics when i already have a degree in economics? Unnecessary repetition if you ask me. Why do i have to take a course in inferential statistics when i will be taking a course in research methodology towards the end of the program?

Taking too many courses per semester confuse students the more and thereby make them pay little attention to each. At the end, overall knowledge is zero or at best very minimal.

It's well.

Operation research, Marketing management, managerial Economics, Financial management and Human resources management

Good luck in your exams

You will make it.

resumed my MBA lectures this week @ University of Northampton Biz school, taking 4 modules this term: HR, MKT, FIN & ACC,Strategic Management, been fun so far and understandable, its only gone crazy this night while trying to study the Balance sheet structuring part of accounting, it's hard as transactions get complex on the financial statement, please does anyone have an idea of the best textbook to use in studying for beginners in Accounting and Finance like me?
Re: MBA Students: Let's Meet Here by aribisala0(m): 10:03am On Oct 05, 2011
i don't know if its the best but it is quite good. it depends on how much depth your programme requires. i am surprised they have not recommended any books. most tend to
accounting and finance for non-specialists peter atrill and eddie mclaney

What do you want to do with the MBA? Work, what type?
Re: MBA Students: Let's Meet Here by aribisala0(m): 4:38pm On Oct 28, 2011
generally it is better that you get some work experience and maturity before doing an MBA . there are many MBAs out there but a good one usually emphasizes group work . this means having quality group members that can share their experience with you. so you must ask what are you bringing to the table. it is not merely (should not be) an academic exercise

e.g. in my cohort we had a colonel,a pilot accountants, doctors, engineers all with over 5 years experience this is very useful in group work and contact building. there were a few 24/5 year olds but honestly i learny nothing from them

more importantly consider why MBA ?? i suggest you do do following exercise
write a one page essay (FOR YOUR OWN CONSUMPTION ONLY) on

where do you see yourself in 7 years time.

be honest and comment on why and how you will get there??
keep that safe and read it after you finish your history programme.

with a degree in history it is even more important to get work experience ??

i intend to establish myself and start my own business. But with my little research, i think i need to acquire some skill and some experience on how to run a successful business. Thats why i wanted to enroll for the Mba programme.
So can u advice me on what step to take ?
