Nigeria should stop using non workable national grid system and adopt a system that will allow gencos supply their power generated to particular discos and the discos determine the prices consumers will pay.

true but let the generation and distribution of pnwer be in the hands of state governments, this power issue will come to an end

It is in private hands already, not in government hands.

The problem is, even if it is in state hands, the states would still need to charge a cost reflective tarrif to make sure the thing runs well...or charge higher taxes on everyone living in the state to fund the power sector.

Having government setting the price is one reason why the power sector does not work. Price setting by any government globally wherever it has been tried always does not end well.

I think INEC should bring the 2023 elections forward so that Obi can start clearing these mess asap.

Things are getting out of hand.

But you folks are all around saying Nigerians should vote 'the candidate' and not the 'party platform' on which he contests inadvertently giving a lee way to the Tinubu campaign machine to confidently forge ahead meaning no one will pay for this mess we have found ourselves in.

For in saner climes the ruling party is given a red card at the polls after a reckless foul on the citizens as it happened in 2015 with the PDP suspended for eight years.

The people have themselves have changed the laws of the game and red is now yellow.

The solution is simple....LET the discos and gencos set the price, not NBET. Not the government.

Also, let everyone have their meter...and let people that bypass the meter get punished by having no power...

Let every Nigerian pay for the power they use, and not use cutlass to chase disco workers doing their job.

Modified

Basically, we have been running NEPA/PHCN/DISCOgenco...at a loss, and the only way to get enough money to fix things...is to run the thing at a profit.

Modified

The issues facing the Nigerian power sector remains multi-faceted but in our view, top on the list is the non-cost reflective tariff. While we acknowledge that the current macroeconomic landscape may not be best suited for another hike in electricity tariffs, we note that the continued adoption of non-cost-reflective tariffs will exacerbate the anemic position of Discos, prevent the overhaul of poor transmission infrastructure, hinder private sector investments and constrain the development of the power sector. With government revenue under significant pressure, we believe government liquidity injections may prove to be insufficient in sustaining the power sector.

Sauce: The Nigerian power sector, still in muddy waters from Nairametrics.

He or she who has ears to hear, let him or her hear.
baba you made a wise contribution but this will go a long way have you been to the north. You will know they have to invest big to set things right. And NEPA workers too are not ready to work

Why can’t this grid be decentralized for god sake? Let all regions have their own power grid. Why if you steal a cable in Akwa Ibom, kaduna will not have light, why

Very true but i am of the opinion that if the states that can fund the generation of power like lagos then they should distribute it as well, the idea of a national grid and government price regulation does not help in a free market situation

It is money primarily.

The government sets their price. Not the companies themselves. And since the government sets their prices, they keep prices to a lower level than what it costs to produce one kwh of power...and pay a subsidy.

That's what a Pricewaterhouse coopers report on the sector found in 2019....that there is a money problem in the sector. And when there is no money...you cannot buy equipment, build facilites, or even attract investors, and expert ones at that.

By contrast, the GSM sector was allowed to grow on its own, with government not setting their price, and they earned enough profit and investment to build a lot of stuff and keep it running.

The GSM sector is competitive. I can change my sim if one doesn't work for me, so telecom companies have innovation built into them. Can I switch discos if one doesn't work for me?

The answer is no. And that is the problem.

The owners are not interested in improving because they know the money is coming in anyway. So they use the sector to borrow money to invest in properties abroad. This is what many rich Nigerians do. They use their Nigerian companies to borrow money from Nigerian banks and take it abroad all while mismanaging the company.

Then they refuse to repay (they can't in many cases) until their company is seized by the banks or AMCON.

IBEDC was recently seized because it could not repay its loans to the banks. This was the same thing that happened with 9Mobile too. And NICON too. And Arik. And Aero Contractors. And almost every other company out there. Even Dangote is doing it. That is why his refinery has not been completed up until this moment.

Why do you think the rich Nigerians always owe the most debt and cannot service/repay back despite being able to?

Take the discos and gencos from nonperformers and give them to people who have the expertise. These people have the know-how but lack the money. Reach an agreement with them to give them part of the genco or disco if they reach certain metrics and you will see the wonders they will perform.

Or are we saying in a country of 200million, we don't have 1,000 that can run a genco or disco effectively? I doubt that.

Care to give specifics?

How much does it cost to produce 1kwh of power?

How much do the DISCOS charge customers for 1kwh of power?

In other words, bring this analysis to life with a real world example. We know that tariffs are not the same across the board for all customers - just pick a particular customer group and give us the numbers.

As at 2018, we were paying between N20-30 per kwh. PwC's report 'Solving the liquidity crunch in the Nigerian power sector put the actual cost reflective tariff in their report at N80 per kwh (page 29 of the report). Moghalu put it at N53 per kwh...all as at 2018.

Now, we pay between N49-71 per kwh, which varies from place to place since the last increase circa 2020

Renewable energy is the future so why are the lovers of darkness that are always looking for a messiah still complaining about PHCN/NEPA or any nonsense grid?

Black man & lack of innovation, Nigeria & its 200 million people is the clear epitome of the failed nature of the black man.

We love the way things are suffering & smiling, maybe we are waiting for a Moses to bring the light of commandments down from the mountain for us to have electricity?

Not exonerating APC & their colossal failure, but since you were born, have you ever had constant electricity in Nigeria?

I believe we Nigerian Hypocrites are to blame for our woes, but it is always easier to pin it on someone else, Obasanjo claimed he spent $16 billion dollars, no electricity since 2007, on November 7th 2013, Jonathan handed over our electricity infrastructure to quacks under some useless privatization, till date no electricity, President Buhari & APC have come & shown us absolute cluelessness.

Peter Obi said he has gone to Egypt on a 3 day crash course to study their electricity infrastructure?

We keep deceiving ourselves, Nigga Area of the blacks love & embrace the darkness of civilization.
