As far as I'm concerned all this talk of being sold to cronies and incompetent people is mostly beer parlour gist. Any proper student of economics and business will know that there is a lot of difference between the telecoms sector and power sector.

Telecoms companies were given free hand to set their prices, electricity companies were not.

Telecom tarrifs have always been cost reflective, electricity tarrif have not been.

By the nature of telecoms (a virtual product), you cannot steal it or avoid paying for it. Electricity is often consumed without paying or outright stolen.

The marginal cost of providing telecoms service to extra 10,000 people once the infrastructure was rolled out is pretty much zero. To supply electricity to new 10,000 people will always require new infrastructure (poles, wires, transformers, more generation etc). Hence why the tariffs needs to be cost reflective.

Telecoms are not burdened by any middle man. Mtn sells directly to customers. Electricity is burdened by Too many players. GENCO, DISCO, TCN, NBET, GAS COMPANIES, etc and can only be as strong as its weakest link.

Besides NNPC has not been sold, so what are you talking about? Hence my beer parlour gist!! Too many people are uninformed in Nigeria about how things really work, yet we all feel we are well educated. Hence why so many people cannot be employed by multinational companies.
Thank you for adding substance to what has been a content-free discussion until now. Most Nigerians seem utterly incapable of addressing issues in terms of facts and logic, preferring to resort to conspiracy-mongering, personalization of issues and the seeking out of scapegoats for what are ultimately systemic problems.

Nigerian politicians recognize all too well that most Nigerians would rather products and services be "free" than that they actually be any good, which is why the price of petrol and electricity are both capped below levels that would attract sustainable investment. Any efforts to explain this to the ignorant masses is either ignored or smeared as "evidence" that the explainer must be a stooge for some imaginary "cabal" which is to blame for the inevitable outcome.

LET US CALL A SPADE A SPADE
This current Government has failed in provision of Power (was power this bad in previous years in area you are currently staying, why did current Goverent not maintain the facilities) . Did we have outages like this in the past? The Buhari/APC regime should have used the various recovered looted funds to address the Power issue. At least Obasanjo solved Power problem during his time and the government is free to probe for looted funds and recover them. Current APC government has failed totally in the area of Electricity and Security. Our prayer is that may we never have these type of vagabonds in power again.

Telecoms prices are being regulated they dont increase tariffs arbitrarily like power sector.

Telecoms dont receive grants from the FG and CBN like power sectors do.

Telecoms invest in infrastructure, they build masts, power them to run and secure them.

Mention one significant assets built by Power sector, they have increased tariffs with no significant improvement in supply, they sre still being subsidized by the government till today. They dont provide tansformers , wont fix broken poles . All they know is to collect for services they dont render.

Only an idiot will call the complaints of the failings of the power sector beer parlor gist.

The body set up to regulate the power sector is useless (offcourse the collect 1% of the gross revenues discos collect)

They donot obey govt directives to ensure that at least 50 percent consumers in their respective zones are metered.

For Telecoms you can see what you re paying for, but for the discos its a racket.

Face it the Power sector has failed woefully partly because the people who run it are incompetent and only interested in stealing from customers.

You are only making this irresponsible statement because you benefit from the corruption that fuels the Discos.

I love this exchange between Atiku Abubakar and @YeleSowore about the National Grid Collapse.

My reply:

Thank you @YeleSowore for reminding this notorious treasury looter @atiku. Atiku Abubakar thinks that Nigerians have forgotten how they looted the public treasury blind. The Buhari gang of bloodthirsty killers only learned from them.

AA analysis shows how much he understands the Nigeria problem.

Privatization is the way forward in a country where greed and corruption has eaten deep into the system, with privatization of the economy we won't have much to do with mismanagement of public funds, employment will be base on competence, and there will be competition between investors to increase productivity and maximize gain.

Its not enough to privatized the power distribution company, incompetence in the generation of power is what is causing the collapse, every aspect of the power sector should be privatized and let government be the regulators of it

First time to agree with you. Yorubas are hypocrites and they have PhDs in goal post shifting. Atiku is corrupt because he worked with Obasanjo, but osinbajo is a saint despite working in the most corrupt government that we have ever witnessed. Can you see how deluded they are?

Sowore has always been a political activist when your candidate was doing something else. Sowore has not tasted power, he was never involved in pandora report nor used government money to invest on his family business. If we are looking for alternative, it should be a political activist and not a business oriented politician who will sell Nigeria to China and promote regionalism. As for me and my people Jagaban is the best among all the contestants. He was in the struggle in late1900s to return power from military to civilian government when military was messing up with the nation's resources
