Vox populi, vox Dei: From Social Media To The Streets, How Obi's Movement Is Metamorphizing Into A Winning Formula

There is a Latin saying, Vox populi, vox Dei, that is, “The voice of the people is the voice of God.”, Never underestimate the power of a small group of thoughtful, devoted citizens to change the world. And in reality that is the only way the world can change if it has to change.

The election campaign for Peter Obi's presidential bid is quickly taking shape and becoming a movement that is set to address a wide variety of issues that are currently plaguing the country. It is a metamorphosis that should be studied as a course in our schools right now.

So much has changed in the previous ten years, including some of the societal issues that have taken centre stage in the global arena. In many of these cases, the voice of the youths are the loudest and most passionate.

The fact that today's youth activists have grown up with social media is one of the main things that distinguishes this decade of youth activism from previous ones. This generation of young changemakers, who are adept at navigating the internet sphere, has been a force when it comes to amplifying their views, regularly demanding on being heard by the world and the leaders they'll soon be electing (or against).

With the touch of a button, the youth of today are able to mobilize the public, unlike the youth of previous generations who frequently need weeks of organizing since they relied on techniques like newspaper ads and phone calls to disseminate the word. They have also demonstrated the importance of everyone's voice and redefined what it means to be an activist.

One of the major differences between this decade and previous ones is that today's youth activists have grown up with social media. This group of young changemakers has been a force when it comes to amplifying their views, regularly insisting on being heard by the world and the leaders they will eventually vote for (or against).

Like most revolutionary movements across the world, it started with the burning desires of the citizens in seeking genuine ways to change the status quo for the betterment of the majority of its citizens.

The Peter Obi movement is a clear movement that is hell-bent on retaking the country by whatever legal means necessary; they have the button in their palms and have taken it upon themselves to launch the Peter Obi Structure campaign, which is largely aimed at proving the doubters wrong that Obi has no structure.

The beauty of this parade is that unlike the APC and PDP which relies on top to bottom approach the LP Obi movement is strictly from the grassroots up. From bottom to top , the movement has so many young Nigerians driving the candidacy of Obi and have taken it upon themselves to start building a structure in every local government across the federation, these people are even yet to have any link with the LP as a party but are passionately making their impacts.

Check out how a relatively unknown Facebook user who, as they say, lacks structure has taken it upon himself to begin putting neighborhood billboards on the streets of Jalingo. And he is not alone; thousands of Nigerians, both individually and in groups, are doing the same.

Their love and passion is so organic that it can be smelled from a long distance away. Let us examine the recent voter registration exercise to determine how they may affect the success of political parties in the upcoming presidential elections.

According to INEC's report, 12.29 million registrations have been finished in total. This means that the country's voter list, which had 84 million people on it in 2019, now includes nearly 12 million more eligible voters.

The most surprising aspect of this registration process is that youths who had previously been apathetic about exercising their right came out in force to register to vote.

According to the most recent data, youths accounted for 71.4 percent of all completed registrations in the CVR, accounting for 8.78 million of the 12.29 million total registrations.

According to INEC, the age range of these 71 percent of youngsters is 18 to 34, and this is where the danger resides. A detailed investigation finds that, regardless of party affiliation, seven out of every ten youths support Peter Obi. The only percentage of youths that support the APC and PDP are mostly not between the ages of 18 and 34 . As a result, Obi appears to be ahead in terms of new voter registration.

In past presidential elections, only roughly 34-35 percent of registered voters turned out to vote, amounting to just 28-30 million people out of 84 million registered voters. A further examination of these same records reveals that over 65 percent of voters, or approximately 56 million people who do not vote, are dissatisfied with the way the country is run.

So, give or take, there are approximately 56 million potential undecided voters in addition to the 12.29 million freshly registered voters which political parties can scout for.

Peter Obi appears to be a VALID alternative to the PDP and the APC, which explains the daily support for his dreams, just like comedian I Go Save recently said in his video that the goat has been pushed to the wall and is ready to fight back. Peter Obi is currently in the forefront because Nigerians need a symbol to unify around after being pushed to the limit.

The Peter Obi's movement includes thousands of political strategists, capable organizers, administrators, activists and lobbyists. It’s a dramatic tale, filled with remarkable youths facing down incredible obstacles to win that most dramatic presidential elections ever to be witnessed.

Obi is currently the voice of the people, but how long he will keep this enviable position in the run-up to the elections remains to be seen.

See photos of the youths' heroic efforts to light up Taraba State for Peter Obi.
