Why Did The God Rest On The Seventh Day? by Balerion: 6:37pm On Aug 09, 2022
According to Genesis 2:2-3
"By the seventh day God had finished the work he had been doing; so on the seventh day he rested from all his work. 3Then God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it he rested from all the work of creating he had done"
My question is why would an omnipotent and supreme being rest? Was he tired? Fatigued? Or he just needed to rest?

Rest there simply means He has finished creating all that is to be created and there is absolutely nothing to create anymore.

To be honest, God did not explain why he rested or what he meant by the world rest. God has not revealed everything to man so we do not need to guess or use our punny human wisdom in attempting to explain the divine.

The answer to your question is not revealed in the bible.

God is always working so it ain't a question of fatigue or tiredness. Instead, as the passage clearly informs you, God rested from all the work of creating He had done. God's creation project was completed in 6 days is what we are being told there. undecided

It could have been "God created everything in six day" but the secenth day was included for a reason. The word "rest" was mentioned twice

If I had it, I would have shared it with you but like I said, God did not explain the purpose of his Sabbath day rest in the bible.

The inclusion of the seventh day seemed like it was to make clear that the work took 6 days. And the mention of rest(Holy) seemed to indicate a beginning of that which is not a part of the creation job which was previously concluded. undecided

What exactly did God do on the seventh day?

In Genesis 2:3 The first word for rest, sabbat, literally means to stop, and the first depiction is God himself stopping in his task of creation.

When a professional artist is done with a beautiful artwork, he / she stops, or in this case rests from further activity on the artwork... not because they are tired, but because they are finished with it.

"And God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good. And the evening and the morning were the sixth day." - Genesis 1:31

GOD does not need rest! "Behold, he that keepeth Israel shall neither slumber nor sleep." - Psalm 121:4

+++

The rest is also parabolic in that once GOD saves a person from judgment, justifies and sanctifies him/her... said person enters into GOD's eternal rest in YESHUA, the CHRIST!

"For he that is entered into his rest, he also hath ceased from his own works, as God did from his." - Hebrews 4:10

We are saved by GOD's work... and not our own.

"For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast." - Ephesians 2:8-9

It was a day of Rest, a Holy day, rest from work of creation. Doesn't mean He did absolutely nothing. Instead, it means He didn't do creation-related work. undecided

Consider here the Sabbath law of the Old Covenant, which basically was a day in which God commanded the people of Israel to do no work. Does this mean God demanded them to do literally nothing on that day? Absolutely not! Instead what God commanded them not to do any unholy work - labor that was for perishable food. On the Sabbath, a man was allowed to rescue his animal should it fall into a well or fell in harms way, people were allowed to help those in need on the sabbath day, heal those who are sick, cast out demons, etc. So, it wasn't totally a day to do Absolutely nothing in but instead a day to do only show love to one's neighbor in obedience to God's commandment and it is known as a day of rest. undecided

Did God rest on the Sabbath day? Yes or No

NO. The Sabbath day is a day out of a week in which the people of Israel are commanded to do no work. However, in Genesis, we are told instead that God rested from all of His creation work, not that He only rested for only one day. So the Sabbath rest of God isn't a matter of a day. Or to put it another way, Genesis does not tell us that God only rested for one day. undecided

The passage says God rested on the 7th day from His creation work. What it doesn't say is that God did absolutely no work on the 7th day. Another thing it doesn't say is that God continued with the creation job after the 7th day. So it is invalid to assume the seventh day in which God rested to subject to the same rules given by God in regards the Sabbath day which He decreed in the land or Israel. undecided

I do. undecided

Jesus Christ for example declared Himself the Lord of the Sabbath and throughout His time with His followers, He did nothing we can report as labor of the kind that that we are used to yet He is reported to gone every where doing good works, the kind of work that pleases God, the same kind He calls us to do - John 6 vs 25 vs 35. undecided
