Students of history will agree with me that corruption in Nigeria started during the colonial era.
Our african traditional religion system never allow any form of corrupt practices cos u'll be dealt with immediately if found guilty.
I also want to support those who have argued that d discovery of oil worsen corruption in naija. Oil money was seen as bonuses hence, they looted it.
Introduction of western religions ( christainity & islam) has also contributed 2 d spread of corruption in naija. In those days, d fear of Gods such as sango, sanpona, esu etc in yoruba tradition never allowd for corrupt practices. In short; we r all corrupt.

Corruption is in every society and system but the problem with Nigeria's that we abuse corruption. In American,no police man on uniform can come openly at a major bus stop to start collecting money from drivers but in Nigeria,it happens! Our press's not even helping matters, they don't investigate and expose, they just expose to assasinate a character.

Azikiwe was the first major political figure investigated for questionable practices. In 1944, a firm belonging to Azikiwe and family bought a Bank in Lagos. The bank was procured to strengthen local control of the financial industry. Albeit, a report about transactions carried out by the bank showed though Azikiwe had resigned as chairman of the bank, the current chairman was an agent of his. The report wrote that most of the paid-up capital of the African Continental Bank were from the Eastern Regional Financial Corpor In western Nigeria, politician Adegoke Adelabu was investigated following charges of political corruption leveled against him by the opposition. The report led to demand for his resignation as district council head.
In the Northern region, against the backdrop of corruption allegations leveled against some native authority officials in Bornu. The Northern Government enacted the Customary Presents order to forestall any further breach of regulations. Later on, it was the British administration that was accused of corrupt practices in the results of elections which enthroned a Fulani political leadership in Kano, reports later linking the British authorities to electoral irregularities were discovered.

Buhari almost stopped it until Babangida (IBB) , snatched power and institutionalised corruption.
Obasanjo (Obj) took it to another level and is known to be the bigest looter in African history.

This is true.

I remember the slogan during IBB time egunje (bribe) dey for Lagos. Then latter changed to egunje dey for every where.

Taking our minds down the memory lane. Curruption was one of the legacies that our colonial lords left for us.They actualy taught us corruption and being very good students we learnt it and excelled above our teachers. They sapped our resources and used it to develop Europe leaving us like a desert. Nigerian employees were underpayed when compared to their foreign colleagues with same qualifications. For instance, Harbert Macauley resigned his job start revolution when he sufferred injustice continually. He was being paid about 1/3 of the Salary his classmate at Oxford University working with him in the same company in Nigeria. While these were happening any nigerian that gets any opportunity into the then government saw it as an opportunity to have his share of the national cake. The bye product seems to have come to stay as a legal tender.

Corruption is a natural human instinct of ALL human peoples everywhere. It is basically the old school approach to public office and public services in what was often, in antiquity, a relatively hostile and untrustworthy environment. It really has no modern roots, although certain conditions can cause it to thrive. Those of you who think corruption in Nigeria is rooted in colonialism or some modern-era politician should read the journals of the European explorers who visited pre-colonial West Africa in the early 19th century, like Mungo Park and the Lander brothers. You may be surprised to discover familiar behavioural patterns in the African chiefs and their officials extorting "presents" and bribes from the travellers, which seemed to be their modus operandi. The difference between the developed countries of this world and other countries like Nigeria is that at a certain stage the leaders of the former saw the problem and worked hard to reduce corruption in their societies to minimal levels.

The beginning of corruption in Naija? Hmmm, It's a long story! But let me see, Corruption started with the colonial masters: (1) Amalgamation of the northern and southern protectorates to what we now call Nigeria is a classical example of corruption (2) The policy of direct rule used by the british colonial master to exert power over subjects via the emirs and chiefs is another cousin of corruption (3) The delay of independence from 1957 to 1960 is a perfect example of corruption by our founding fathers (4) The co option of certain lands and communities into certain parts of Nigeria in order to increase population and gain national relevance in terms of sharing national cake is a big time example of corruption (5) The coup of 1966 and the follow up riots that led to the civil war is a grandeur semblance of corruption in the inner workings of government (6) According to Buhari in his 1983 coup speech, Shehu Shagari became the first civilian president through corrupt means and then continued in that respect (7) The evil genius (IBB) legalised and formalised corruption with his chop-i-chop method of administration (cool The annulment of June 12 elections is a grand child of corruption (9) Abacha's regime brought about the advancement of corrupt practices from the known chop-i-chop status to a status best known as the-more-you-look-the-less-you-see, thieving tactics! (10) Abdulsalami's method is the most discreet of all, slow like a tortoise, as shy as a gecko, cunning like a rabbit, green like a snake under grass, sharp as a razor blade. (11) OBJ? Yar'adua? GEJ? My mouth shot up!!!

bknight:
corruption in its simpliest definition is d sins that we commit. not just d looting our political leaders engage themselves with.it is corrupt to tell a lie same way as it is of d kid that gets high marks in school for assignment we all know he didnt do himself.while d icpc, efcc and d ccb are on public, civil servants and d general public, religious leaders are not doing enough to tackle corruption at the minds who assembly before them. d anti-graft agencies can focus on financial corrupt practices, misuse of office, disregard for d law of d land etc but is going to help curb individual lying habits etc?

when did corruption start in nigeria? i'd say since there was a nigeria! maybe grand corruption took a new turn during d oil boom and was on d onwardprogressive destruction, but petty corruption's been there all d while.

in nigeria it is particularly tough to handle because a case is being manipulated into tribal, religious and political nexus.in d end u get so confused u wonder wat we're actually prosecuting for
