Am a yoruba man and i think "AWOLOWO" started what is called corporate corruption very systemic indeed. He carried out his devil sent assignment by siphoning money from federal treasury to his private companies. He collaborated with cocacola chiefs and own the only license to trade the product until the arrival of IBB, also did some little bit of white substance movement with the likes of OOni of Ife, young abiola then, Tony Ani, Nnamdi Azikwe, Mobolaji Bank Anthony, Fernandez etc. before the young ones like Nwayanwu, Okoya etc took over.

Agui ironsi, Dinka, Obj, Akintola, exploded corruption in the government before IBB introduced the nuclear method of stealing by government. Hence, we are where we are today.

Corruption has been with us from Time immemorial but never was as chronic as what we have got now.

hw can u prove this mr.? this is d same ethno-political and religious sentiments we bring into every issue we experience as a nation, not giving a clear view to tackling problems.
besides d two forms of corruption r called grand and petty corruptions tongue

while not absolving obj of corrupt practices as u wld rather not absolve urself neither, obj was d first to be recorded at tackling corruption with d
Jaji Declaration of 1977, then came
Ethical Revolution of 1981 in shagari's era (one of nigeria's finest stateman)
war against indiscipline was initially in 1984 under buhari
ibb then came with National Orientation Movement in 1986
Mass Mobilisation came next in '87
before d reappearance of war against indiscipline and corruption under abacha (buhari's closeness to abacha may have bring abt this).

not until 2000, when again, obj became d first recorded to constitutionalize anti-corruption war and took it to the courts. all other previous attempts of trashing out corruption were only operated as a sitting govt's own contribution to d nation, when a new govt came, it came wit its own pet project more like NGOs.
obj's administration passed d corrupt practices and other related offences act 2000 which established d ICPC. first ever under d law of d land to tackle corruption, again obj!

Chinua Achebe's novel: A MAN OF THE PEOPLE deals with corrupt politics in Nigeria. During my primary school days immediately after the Nig/Biafran war, BRIBERY, CORRUPTION AND NEPOTISM made constant appearance in Moral Instruction and current affairs lessons. We can surmise that corruption i.e, the Nigerian version started from Independence.

Corruption existed in the colonial era and is insinuated in novels written in the early sixties. However the leadership of the First republic i.e. Zik, Balewa, Awo and Sardauna rendered selfless service to the people and cant be regarded as corrupt judging by what we see today. Thats why virtually all that they did in their regions were not located in their places of origin as is the vogue now. Awo did not influence the siting of UI, OAU, WNTV(now (NTA Ibadan), Industrial estates etc in Ikenne. Ditto for ABU whoch is neither in Sokoto or Bauchi where Sardauna and Balewa come from respectively. They were contented with improving the lot of the people through education, infrastructural development and support of agric enterprise which was the main source of revenue. The PWD(public works dept) then did a wonderful job of maintaining roads and public facilities.

IMO corruption became an issue with the coming of oil money which is regarded as free money. Also the disregard of the regional setup which hitherto created room for healthy competition reduced the drive for each state to excel. Remember Gowon said we had so much money and didnt know what to do with it. So we wasted money hosting the black world in 1977! In the process came contractors and the ten percenters. This was the issue Murtala/Obasanjo were to address in addition to returning Nigeria to democracy. OBJ handed over as we all know but free money from the central govt had changed the system almost irretrievably. The 2nd republic didnt do better. Remember Dikko and Akinloye. Buhari/Idiagbon tried with the war against indiscipline but had thier own issues which frustrated people who happily welcomed IBB.

Enter IBB with his charming smile and his wily ways and corruption is instituitonalised as a way of making the boys happy and keeping people under control.  For someone who loves Machiaveli, you can understand how he thinks. His coming  was really the turning point as Nigeria seems to have been running downhill preety fast since then. He played so many games with our lives and kept shifting the goalpost and settling/discrediting people until June 12 became his albatross. June 12 was a silent but deadly war for those who were old enough to witness it in the southwest. It was a battle for freedom and a better society but have we accomplished that? Another story entirely!

Corruption in Nigeria started as an infection and it was never treated and ended up becoming a full blown disease(epidemic). It has now eaten too deep into our systems unfortunately. We can point finger all we want to but at the end of the day we are all collectively GUILTY!!!  sad sad
Re: When Did Corruption Start In Nigeria? by hackney(m): 1:05pm On Aug 06, 2011
Corruption started when the whites left.
The whites left and it seemed they left with integrity,self-respect and efficiency.

The black monkey took over and could not believe he was in control of so much money so he stole a little, nothing happened, he
increased his loot continously since then.

The worst part is that he then instituted it to a point where the winner takes it all and where someone that does not loot becomes the f.o.o.l.

you guys should watch the film called Mister Johnson.

plot:
In 1923 British Colonial Nigeria, Mister Johnson is an oddity -- an educated black man who doesn't really fit in with the natives or the British. He works for the local British magistrate, and considers himself English, though he has never been to England. He is always scheming, trying to get ahead, which lands him in a lot of hot water.

From my studies on Nigeria and corruption, this mainly is the right and fundamental answer to our problem.
The discovery of Oil started our march to doom. How can you foolishly declared "US" VERY rich.
FESTAC 77 saw all juju in africa comming to have abode in Nigeria.
I wonder if anybody had time to check on their VISAS and expiring dates cause I believe many of them were left behind.

Have you seen anywhere corruption is a way of life, tradition or rather part of cultural practices? Why is corruption a crime in Nigeria? Those are rhetoric questions for you slowpoke! There are countries which are worse than Nigeria in the corruption assessment and that doesn't justify that it is not a bad thing in any society so does in Nigeria.

If you didn't have anything meaningful to say just read other people's comments than running your stupid tongue around like a fool.
